DECORATING SMOOTHLYDOES IT
Latest trends and technologies in all parts of the industry often lean towards making things simpler and easier. Plaster specialist Toupret tells Elizabeth Jordan about the plaster method popular in the US which could make UK plastering much simpler.
T
oupret was established in France in 1938 with the invention of ready- to-mix fillers for wall preparation. As early as 1938, Monsieur Jardin designed the process of a practical and easy-to- use filler that could be used on all construction sites. Back then, the concept of ready-to-use didn’t mean what it does today. This was the first time all the ingredients of a reliable, high quality powder filler were put into one box so that the tradesperson simply had to add water. Already a big deal on the continent and in the USA, spray plastering is growing in popularity in the UK, with more and more companies and professionals either investing in product and equipment, or keen to understand how it can benefit them. But what exactly is spray plaster? And how can merchants help customers find the best products, suited to their needs?
Spray plastering is an alternative to traditional plastering, and uses a high-pressure spray, created by an airless machine, to apply a specially designed filler for use as a plaster. The machine is equipped with a gun which allows an even distribution, as well as a fast application.
Airless machines work by creating pressure to force the plaster through a spray nozzle in the gun, as opposed to using air pressure. Each spray machine has its own particular power capabilities and this, combined with the type of plaster being used, the type of job being carried out, and the required spray angle, determines the interchangeable nozzle size needed for the gun. The correct nozzle size is specified by the spray plaster manufacturer on the packaging. Spraying itself is fast and simple. The user stands at right angles to the wall, just shy of a
30
metre away, and squeezes the trigger to apply the plaster. This should be done at a constant 90° spraying angle, 1sq m at a time, moving the gun parallel to the surface at a constant speed to ensure an even coat. With each pass, you overlap the previous by 50%, and, once finished, skim the surface with a blade or trowel at least 50cm long. If necessary, another coat can be applied after the first has dried. Then it’s just a matter of sanding and painting. The benefits of spray plastering are substantial. It saves time, money and effort, and produces a high quality finish. Timewise, productivity is more than 50% higher than traditional, manual methods on larger jobsites, as it’s faster to apply and typically ready to paint in just 24 hours, with little or no sanding required. In fact, on a 50sq m jobsite, it would take an average of 8 hours to apply two coats of plaster using the traditional, manual method, as opposed to just 2½ hours with airless spray plaster.
Time savings are also cost savings, with lower labour costs a result of increased productivity. And as spray plasters come ready mixed, there’s no additional water consumption, leading to less product waste; not to mention a dust-free process, cutting down on cleaning. The easy spray application also means considerably less stress on the arms and back, and greater comfort provided by the lightweight gun and hose. The machine’s size and weight makes it more manageable for sites with stairs. Finally, there’s the versatility and quality. Airless spray plastering is seen as an economical option for new build developments but can also benefit renovations where large surfaces need to be covered. A high-quality finish can be expected, and the method can be used for
a whole host of jobs including backing and levelling, finishing, filling blow holes and even more specialist jobs, such as jointing. This spring, Toupret is launching a new range of spray plasters, bringing its expertise and technical know-how to the category to provide products with excellent application qualities and superior finish, all whilst carrying the guarantee of high quality and reliability the Toupret brand is famous for.
