Beck says that initially most customers do have an idea of what they want, with many of them coming to see something specific on display and then, quite often, they chose something different to what they initially came to look at. “There is so much product choice and indeed numerous ranges within product categories that it can be overwhelming for customers. However, seeing it in situ in our 5,000 sq feet landscaping display allows customers to more accurately visualise the possible end-result of their own project. Of course we are always on hand to offer advice or suggestions, and this naturally provides us with an opportunity up and link sell products too.” Because the Tonbridge landscaping display is well known and impressive, Beck says customers come from far and wide. “We notice a lot of customers travelling up from the south coast and many of the branches that are also owned by IBMG are aware of the display and so they too advise their customers to visit us for landscaping inspiration. We have great relationships with our suppliers and always work in partnership with them - we all have the same goal. We plan to revamp our landscaping display

We think that once it’s finished it is going to look even more fabulous.” Over the last few years the popularity of porcelain paving and composite decking have gone from strength to strength. In fact the use of porcelain has now overtaken natural stone, while there has simultaneously increased popularity in large format paving. For years the grey and dark tones have been popular, but in the last year or so, beck says the company is starting see a lot more interest in the lighter warmer colours. There is also a definite interest in buff and warmer colours for paving. This more natural, warm, and neutral palette is extending to all parts of landscaping, as well as external cladding and paintwork.


Another key trend is the extended use of cladding, beyond just feature walls, to create other structures such as planters and bespoke seating areas. Indeed, this is often a great way to use up left over or scrap wood-plastic decking, cladding and fencing too. “A final trend is the rise of ‘the curve’ in landscaping projects - particularly for seating, paths and decking areas. Curves help to add softness into spaces while using a hard material.” n
