“Our commitment to sustainability is intrinsically linked to the products we produce and how we manufacture them. All of the products are highly engineered to maximize their sustainable and energy-saving properties. We have an active environmental management system that provides guidance and oversight that governs the operations within each facility and the potential impact of these operations on the environment. The adoption of sustainability-driven principles throughout the company in relation to lean manufacturing, waste reduction, responsible sourcing, recycling, and energy usage, ensures we continue to improve every stage of production,” Monaghan continues. “We’re proud that all divisions are ISO 14001 accredited and our most carbon intensive manufacturing assets including the cement factory are accredited to the international energy standard ISO 50001. Since 2017 through various energy efficiency projects and multi-million-pound investment we have saved 59 million kWh of energy.” Decarbonisation is the key challenge facing the cement industry, and, Monaghan says a primary area of focus at Mannok. “We’ve set ambitious targets to reduce our carbon emissions by a third by the end of the decade and go on to achieve net zero by 2050.” Mannok collaborated with FLSmidth in the successful implementation of the World first deployment of the FUELFLEX Pyrolyzer, a new combustion system that has almost eliminated the use of fossil fuel in the most carbon-intensive stage of cement production, pre-calcination.
In a full year this will displace 40,000 tons of coal resulting in a CO2 saving of 58,000
tonnes whilst significantly reducing NOx emissions.
There is an ambitious long-term vision of a decarbonised green energy supply in the form of an Energy Valley - A transformative 15-year programme of change, which is set to bring the company to within touching distance of energy independence and will help achieve its net zero goal no later than 2050. The multi-phase programme sets out to harness large scale renewable energy sources and drive innovation in sustainability to create a closed-loop process which will replace 4 million litres of diesel per year, decarbonise the production of cement by removing over half a million tonnes of CO2 annually, and provide decarbonised energy security to Mannok’s downstream and related manufacturing facilities with new 150MW of dedicated renewable capacity.

phase of project delivery under the Hydrogen Business Model. This is a keystone project for us to kick start the longer-term Energy Valley vision.”
Mannok has already electrified a portion of its van fleet, installed EV charging facilities at different locations, and is now looking at decarbonising its heavy trucks and quarry vehicles with green hydrogen. The Mannok Sustainably Mixed Loads programme combines heavy and light products in one delivery, maximising trailer capacity and reducing the volume of lorries on the road. The mixed load solution has reduced associated carbon emissions by almost 50%.
