SUSTAINABILITY
Rendall says that the group isn’t just making changes at its head office, that, as a zero waste-to-landfill company, it has put extensive measures in place across the organisation to ensure that on average the 295 tonnes of waste generated each year are recycled, reused, or repurposed.
BRISTAN PLANS TO REDUCE CARBON
Bristan Group has outlined its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and a continuation of its partnership with the Carbon Trust on its Route to Net Zero Standard.
T
he successful installation of the new solar panels is just one of the many carbon reduction initiatives Bristan Group has rolled out across the organisation
in order to reduce its carbon footprint year over year. The company is also regularly seeking consultation from industry experts on how to be a more sustainable organisation.
This, according to Craig Rendall, Specification Director and Environmental Lead, Bristan Group, is why the installation of the 1666 solar panels is not the only change that has been made to the Tamworth head office and distribution centre recently.
“All the lighting in the building has now been replaced with LED lights. PIR sensors have also been installed to monitor office activity and automatically switch off lights when no longer in use. The use of LED lighting and PIR sensors has already resulted in a 6% reduction in the organisation’s lighting energy consumption in the first year of implementation,” he says. Each meeting room in the building has also been equipped with PIR-censored air- conditioning systems which ensures the air conditioning is switched off if left running in an unoccupied space for too long. In addition to this, energy monitoring meters have been installed to continuously track energy usage across the organisation and identify

“Our warehouse operations are also doing their part for the environment with a number of operational changes,” he adds. “Currently, warehouse operations recycle on average 100 tonnes of cardboard every year, while the boxes used in all its automated machines are made of 100% recycled paper. We have also replaced the bonding and stretch film, which is used for securing products to pallets, with a 30% recycled content material film. Even the pallets used for securing products are being recycled or reused. Broken pallets and wood waste are used to manufacture new pallets. Where wood can’t be reused to make new pallets, it’s shredded and used for animal bedding and wooden pellets for heating”. Even the ceramic waste generated during the manufacturing process is crushed and used as non-specification road-building materials, he explains.
In addition to sustainability improvements across its head office and distribution centre, the group is also focusing on ways to help customers reduce their energy usage and be more conscious of the environment. “The Eco Start technology on bathroom taps, saves energy by having cold water as the default central start position of the tap handle. This means that hot water is only activated when the tap lever is moved from the central position, so the boiler is not unnecessarily fired up. This reduces unnecessary demand on hot water heating systems and helps to reduce overall energy usage in the home.”
opportunities for ways Bristan Group can improve its overall energy usage.
The head office car park has 8 electric vehicle charging stations installed for use by staff and visitors. The use of EV charging stations is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to reduce CO2 vehicle emissions both by staff and its fleet of vehicles. Bristan Group is also switching to a hybrid-only vehicle fleet as part of its aim to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by 50g per km driven.
Rendall adds: “Also featured are pre-fitted flow limiters, which work to limit the tap’s water flow to as little as 3.5 litres of water per minute, helping to reduce overall water consumption. There are also Infrared taps available that automatically turn off the water flow when not in use as well as timed flow controls and BREEAM-certified self-closing ‘push button’ taps which only emit water for a short period of time. “We are also currently in the process of removing all unnecessary paper from our product packaging, instead switching to digital versions for all fitting instructions and maintenance information.
“All of these environmentally-friendly measures mean Bristan Group’s products can be bought with confidence and trusted to help reduce water consumption and improve energy efficiency through their product design and reinforce our commitment to support customers by reducing the carbon footprint.” n
