You’ve all done very well

W

e all need feedback. If we don’t get it, how will we know if we’re on the right track with whatever it is that we are doing? The

most useful feedback helps you to develop, to understand where you are going, and where you’ve come from, and allows you to grow. So far, so management speak.

The nicest feedback, however, - assuming it’s positive - comes from those whose opinions you really, truly value. It comes from your friends, and your family, and your colleagues. It comes from those who really understand what good looks like in your day-to-day life.

Which leads me neatly onto highlighting the information on pages 14 and 15 of this issue. The nominations have all been entered into this year’s BMJ Industry Awards, the names validated and the categories checked. All that is left now, is for you, dear, dear readers, to head on over to the awards website www.bmjindustryawards. co.uk/vote and cast your vote.

BMJ launched the BMJ Industry Awards in 2018 to recognise and celebrate the very best of this industry. I may be slightly biased, but I truly believe it is the best industry to be in, and occasions like our awards – other, lovely, equally splendid events are also available – prove that. This is the only industry awards programme that is voted for by the people who really understand what the best in merchanting looks like. It’s your customers, your colleagues, your suppliers who work with you, for you, beside you, day-in, day-out.

Some of those nominated have, it’s true, put their own names in the hat. Others have also been entered by other people, by their colleagues and their suppliers. By people who believe that they deserve to be celebrated and acknowledged and rewarded.

It’s as politics-free as we can make it. Industry people and brands chosen by the industry. The secure online voting portal triggers some kind of security algorithm that ensures there’s no cheating. It has a way of balancing things out so that the winners are the ones who genuinely poll the highest number of votes, but evened out so that it’s not just the big companies getting all the votes.

The gala lunch when we will reveal the ultimate winners is on Thursday September 28th, and we are heading back to the art-deco splendour of the Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden. Once again, the lovely Patrick Kielty is our host. Fingers crossed he actually gets to do his comedy turn this time, and that we don’t have any national emergencies, strikes or major funerals to get in the way.

There are some amazing builders, plumbers, timber and decorators merchants working in this industry. There are some incredibly talented individuals, there are some beautiful bathroom and kitchen showrooms and landscaping displays, while the emerging talent highlighted by our Rising Star categories makes me feel very hopeful for the future of this sector. On the supplier side too, this industry is chock-full of talent and dedicated individuals. They all deserve to be recognised and celebrated. So get over to the website and vote for your favourites. Then book your tickets and tables and get ready to raise several glass es to this awesome industry on September 28th. It will be fun, it will be uplifting, and it will be full of love for this fabulous sector. See you there. BMJ
