PEOPLE 10 MINUTES WITH: What is your current role?
I have been the National Sales Manager for DIY merchants at ROCKWOOL UK for five months.
What does your role entail? As part of a 13-strong team, I support merchants with developing their business, sales and service from a commercial aspect.
How did you get started in this industry? When I went to university in 1996, I started a part-time job in the DIY merchants section at Wickes. I stayed there for the three years I was studying, then once I graduated, headed to B&Q in Luton on a graduate trainee scheme.
What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? I was a regional director at Minster Insulation, which prepared me for working with similar products and managing a sales team.
What would you like to achieve in your role?
I would love to help my team become even more commercially focused and develop their individual careers. Also, I want to help ROCKWOOL and merchant partners to build on their existing partnerships and strengthen their operations.
What has been the highlight of your career? My highlight so far has been getting this job! ROCKWOOL is a fantastic company with lots of opportunity and support for customers, not to mention the great team I get to work alongside. We were recently ranked in the Corporate Knights Global 100 sustainability index as the #1 globally among building products companies, which demonstrates the progressive values of our company that I’m proud to be a part of.
What do you see as the main issues for builders’ merchants and for construction? Inflation, labour shortages and the cost of living crisis all spring to mind as big challenges for the industry in 2023. Of course, these are not exclusive to merchants and construction, but it still remains a real challenge.
CAMERON LEE National Sales Manager / ROCKWOOL
If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
I would say to believe in myself and be more confident and positive with my ideas when starting out.
What keeps you busy at the weekends - football, gardening, golf,?
I would like to say golf but, at the moment, it’s more often gardening!
If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking? I love a Rioja.
What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?
Favourite book? Anything from Michael Palin, I love travel books. Favourite film? Shawshank Redemption.
If you could be a superhero, what super- power would you choose?
I would love to fly because I hate being stuck in traffic! BMJ
