THE FASTEST GROWING TREND B

BAMBOO DECKING:

Castle Composites shares two case studies to show the versatility of bamboo composite decking, a supremely sustainable product.

amboo decking is becoming a top choice for homeowners and landscaping designers alike. One reason is its impressive environmental benefits, bamboo being one of the most sustainable materials on the planet, growing up to 10 times faster than hardwood trees. It regenerates without the need for replanting and requires fewer resources like water and pesticides, making it a greener alternative to traditional wood decking. Despite its lightweight nature, bamboo is incredibly strong and durable, able to withstand the elements, from harsh sunlight to heavy rainfall, without warping, cracking, or splintering. Its natural fibres are more resistant to moisture and pests, making it an ideal choice for outdoor environments. In particular, it offers protection from UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes, ensuring the deck will look great year after year. Available in a variety of finishes, from light blonde to deep rich hues, bamboo deck boards complement a wide range of design styles, from modern minimalist to rustic charm.

CASE STUDY: Wooden deck replacement

The client had an existing wooden deck that had been in place for over a decade, and over the years, had deteriorated due to exposure to the elements, becoming weathered, with significant cracking, warping, and splintering, despite regular maintenance. : The client had also experienced problems with termites and other woodboring insects, which further compromised the integrity of the decking.

After researching various decking materials, the client decided to replace it with bamboo decking because of the material’s

high tensile strength, resistance to weathering, minimal maintenance requirements and modern, sleek look that can enhance the overall aesthetic of an outdoor space. Its uniform appearance and rich colour options made it an attractive choice. The project began with the removal of the old wooden decking. Once the site was prepared, the new bamboo decking was installed on bamboo joists. The installation process was smooth, with the bamboo planks fitting seamlessly onto the new bamboo substructure. The client opted for a natural finish that complemented their outdoor environment, and both customer and contractor were extremely pleased with the outcome of the project, saying: "It's amazing how little we have to worry about maintaining the deck now. Considerably less staining and sealing—we just enjoy it!"

CASE STUDY: Roof deck replacement

The owners of a high-end residential property located in the outskirts of a city needed to replace its ageing wooden roof terrace decking, which had begun to warp, crack, and show signs of decay, compromising both the aesthetics and safety of the terrace.

After evaluating various materials, the decision was made to replace the old wood decking with a sand-coloured bamboo decking laid on a bamboo substructure. The installation was completed using adjustable pedestals, which allowed for

precise levelling and ensured long-term stability on the roof terrace. Once the old decking was cleared, the surface was p repared for the new installation. Adjustable pedestals supported the bamboo substructure, allowing for easy adjustment to accommodate inconsistencies in the terrace surface and ensuring a perfectly level decking installation. The sand-coloured bamboo decking from Ambooo was then installed, to create a seamless and elegant finish. The choice of sand colour added a light, modern aesthetic that complemented the surrounding urban landscape while maintaining a natural look. The space is now a modern, sustainable, and durable outdoor living area. The new decking not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the terrace but also offers superior performance in terms of durability, maintenance, and environmental impact compared to traditional timber and composite decking options.
