AND FINALLY
Elliotts get the beers in for their
birthday
One thing is clear this year, Eliotts, the Hampshire-based builders merchants, have had enormous fun thinking up ways to celebrate their 175th birthday year. The horse and cart delveries, the chairman and MD dressing up in olde-worlde costumes, the drone footage of the fleet and now, beer. Founder Thomas Elliott owned
a brewery and four pubs in Southampton in the 1870s, so Elliotts teamed up with local micro-brewery Tap It Brewing Co to launch an exclusive pale ale to celebrate.
It launched on International Beer Day (Aug 3), 310 members of Elliotts staff got their hands on two bottles of Elliotts 175 pale ale presented in a special-branded box. Tom Elliott, managing director of Elliotts, said: “We wanted go
back to our heritage and brew a beer with a modern-day twist. Partnering with Tap It Brewing Co was a natural fit as they’re a stone’s throw away from us. Plus, they make exceptional beer!” Rob Colmer, head brewer at Tap
It Brewing Co, added: “It’s been great to work with Elliotts. We had a couple of initial taste tests at our tap room and together we agreed on a flavour profile that would work for them. We’ve brewed a unique recipe that’s re- freshing, dry, full of citrus flavours and perfect for summer.” When they say limited edition,
they really mean it - when it’s gone it’s gone, though customers- did get the chance to win some and BMJ was given a sneaky taster. Editor-in-Chief Fiona Rus- sell Horne said that only thing wrong with it was that limited supply: “Hic.”
Wirquin raise funds for Children’s Hospital
A team from Wirquin Ltd has raised funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Doncaster Rotary Club by taking part in a Dragon Boat Race.
The event, which has now run for 9 consecutive years, was the St George’s Dragon Boat Challenge held at Lakeside,
Doncaster in July. The team of 10 paddlers and 1 drummer from Wirquin competed in a 30 foot Dragon Boat and had to complete the 250m course twice. The fastest 9 teams then battled it out in the semi finals and the top 3 in the final.
Denton Nicholls was the winner and crowned the Dragon Boat Challenge Champions of 2018. Wirquin has taken part in the fun event for the past 5 years and they named the team this year the “Wirqueens and Kings’ who came 13th place out of 24 and raised over £400 for charity.

Chandlers supports manager’s 42-mile ride
Family-owned Sussex independent builders merchant company, Chandlers Building Supplies, is helping its Petworth branch manager, Jason Austin to raise money for its 2018 charity partner, the Construction Industry Helpline.
Austin is organising a fun 42-mile bike ride across Sussex on August 18. The cycle route starts at the company’s Petworth branch and finishes at its Ringmer head office. A group of Chandler’s employees will be joining him on the relaxed ride and are appealing for others to join them. The team of cyclists is currently 35-strong and they are planning to complete the ride across Sussex in 4-5 hours. Last year Austin suffered a heart attack and underwent open heart surgery. His recovery has been life changing and the inspiration for this bike ride. He hopes lots of keen cyclists of any ability will join him. He said: “I’d like to share this journey with as many people as possible so please join us, have a fun day, keep your heart healthy and help a great charity!”
Participants are asked to raise much-needed funds for the Construction Industry Helpline, 0345 605 1956, by raising sponsorship or making a donation to take part. For more information contact:

chandlersbs.co.uk. Every penny raised will go to the charity to provide financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families following an injury or illness.
