ON THE MOVE

• Simon Nevitt has been appointed as operations director of Wienerberger, following the retirement of Tim Thompson. Nevitt, who took over on July

1st 2018, has previously been in senior roles with Ideal Standard.

What is your current role and how long have you been doing it?

• Richard Bywater has been promoted to Head of Supply Chain. Previously, Procurement Manager, Bywater will still be based in the company’s

West Yorkshire-based head office in Wetherby and will report into David Richardson, CFO.

His career at Moores spans 25 years.

I am managing director of Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates. I joined the company 8 years ago as commercial director and have been managing director for the last 12 months.

What does your role entail? No two days are the same. I’m involved in every aspect of the business – from sales to procurement, HR to logistics - so one day I’m involved in developing strategy and discussing what the next 3 years might look like and the next day I can be helping with the bagging! Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates started with a small team who rolled their sleeves up and did whatever was needed - and this down to earth, no-nonsense approach remains today.

• Rudridge has promoted Emma Taylor and Paul Duke to jointly take on the day to day running of the business. Emma Taylor, who joined the company as Financial Controller two and a half years ago, will take up the role of Commercial Finance Manager.

Paul Duke will move from General Manager of the Farnham branch to become the Sales Director. He has worked at Rudridge since the business began, starting off as branch manager at Farnham.

How did you get started in this industry? I started out at 21 years old as a sales representative, selling cold laid tarmac to the utilities for temporary trench reinstatement. In 33 years, I have held a number of roles and, before joining Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates, I experienced the rollercoaster ride of acquisition with Tarmac, Tilcon and back to Tarmac.

What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? Most of my roles have been heavily sales/ commercially focussed. For example, I was key account manager at Tarmac for Packed product to B&Q. My role at Tilcon/Tarmac as key account manager for Packed Aggregates led me to deal with Travis Perkins, Jewson and Buildbase.

• Ibstock Kevington has appointed Sarah Clewlow as Acting Factory Manager at its Midlands factory.

To help her in the role, Ibstock Kevington has

provided Clewlow with a mentor - Kate Gledhill who is the Factory Manager at its factory at Gatwick.

I believe you learn something from every role you take. I was thrown in at the deep end with a Business supplying Garden Centres and this gave me a real insight into the challenges of running a business. Dealing with customers for 33 years is also a great grounding for a managing director as you need to be able to communicate and negotiate with all types of personalities. Listening is a big part of my job!

What would you like to achieve in your role? From a two man set up in a shed, Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates has become the leading dried aggregate supplier in the UK. Of course, I want our growth to continue with increased sales and profits – but I also want the warm, friendly culture and ‘family feel’ of our company to be maintained.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I am really proud to be helping lead this Company. I have worked closely with Martin Poulter, the founder of Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates over the last 8 years. It’s not easy to trust your ‘baby’ with someone else, so the day I was promoted to Managing Director was a special day in my career. This job may have its challenges but I really appreciate the opportunity I have been given.

What do you see as the main issues for builders’ merchants and for the construction industry at the moment? The internet will continue to influence prices and merchants will have to work harder and smarter to capture the same share of customer base. Of course, the B(rexit) word also looms over us all. I think we’re still waiting to see what its impact will be in the short and long term on construction.

If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Wow, hindsight is a fine thing. I think I would tell myself to try and achieve a better work/ life balance, to not worry too much and to remember to switch off. I am very fortunate to have a very happy home life but there are times when work has definitely taken a lot of my energy. Oh – and I would tell myself to follow my own advice more!

Football, rugby, cycling, golf or gardening – which one’s more likely to keep you busy ? Football - Sheffield United and Golf - Handicap 15!

If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking?

Most of it! Lager or red wine, Gin and tonic

What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?

The Kingsmen or latterly Baby Driver. And anything by John Grisham

If you could be a superhero, what super- power would you choose? Invisibility!!!!
