The sustainability ethos of a selection of British manufacturers has been recognised by author and entrepreneur, Tara Button in her book called ‘A Life Less Throw Away’ and she is a great supporter of the Denby ethos. Tara is also founder of website ‘Buy Me Once’ and is leading a movement to change the way we live and shop.

In her book and website Tara gives

examples of products which have an environmentally responsible ethos in our

throw-away society and

stresses how ultimately you save money in the long term by purchasing wisely which essentially means buying products that don’t have to be replaced time and time again.

Consequently due to its rare trinity of being beautiful, versatile and durable, Denby has been highlighted by Tara for its sustainable approach. As Tara says it’s not about buying more for the sake of it but making the best

of what you have, or by buying versatile and durable pottery when needed to mix and match with older pieces of tableware. Denby can have many uses-it can be used every day and for special occasions, it can be used in the oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher so you can cook, serve and store in it. Mugs can hold plants, whilst bowls can be candle or trinket holders and Denby jugs make characterful vases. Denby’s reputation for being durable and with a 10 year guarantee becomes increasingly important as we look to reduce our disposable purchases and none of this comes at the expense of being beautiful and versatile.

Whilst Denby isn’t aiming to be an eco-leader and still strives to improve further, its environmental ethos has been an integral part of the business since its establishment.

Examples of how Denby is already reducing its environmental footprint include:  Our waste clay from creating beautiful and durable pottery is recycled within the process.

 All our moulds are made from plaster of Paris and are responsibly recycled into aggregate along with waste ceramics that don’t make it through our inspection process.

 100,000 litres of glaze is recycled every year which is enough to glaze nearly 1 million pots.

 Denby has its own water treatment plant and each year can purify and return to the water cycle 20 million litres of process water.

 Denby’s energy consumption is at least 15% below industry targets for carbon generation and is continually installing energy saving lighting systems and optimising the gas usage in our kilns.

 Denby are increasingly using shredded waste from our recycled cardboard to create box-fill packing. A high proportion of Denby is sold without packaging but for gifting packaging that is requested by customers, it is recyclable.

As we all strive to be more sustainable, the durability of ceramic ranges that will last a lifetime is more important than ever.
