Denby has long taken responsibility for the need to minimise its environmental impact, in fact, you have to go back over 200 years. After clay was found at Denby in 1809, rather than take the clay by horse and cart
to the family’s pottery three miles away,
William Bourne realised that producing pottery on the site of the clay bed was the least wasteful and so the pottery was opened on the site which still exists today. William’s son, Joseph, was given the task of running the pottery and he perfected improvements in kiln firing techniques in the 1840’s to ensure the more efficient use of firing capacity for which he was granted patents. Land which has been excavated has been restored to pasture whilst the clay has produced beautiful and durable ceramics which will be around for generations to come.

From inception to present day, Denby has taken its approach to sustainability seriously; it has long employed an Environmental Officer to constantly monitor the pottery’s impact on the environment, as an integral part of Denby’s business structure it has an Environmental Management System to monitor its processes and is one of the very few potteries to be ISO 14001 accredited in the UK, which it achieved in 2015. This long-held regard for the environment resulted in Denby being the first pottery to be able to claim zero to landfill for all its process waste but Denby sees all this as just the beginning.
