news BHETA heads to Scotland Yard…

Ahead of the new Offensive Weapons Act, the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), has been invited to join the retailer steering group of Scotland Yard (the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service). The move follows several informal conversations, together with BHETA’s success in securing the extension of the Challenge 25 initiative from alcohol sales to

cover other age-restricted goods, specifically kitchen knives.

The extension will not only include point of sale items but also, for the first time, supplier packaging and distribution company outer packaging, which can now carry the Challenge 25 graphics as well, making make in-store enforcement and delivery enforcement easier for retail and distribution company staff. This latest development has interested Scotland Yard

as part of its production of training resources to help reduce the theft and underage sales of knives in conjunction with the National Business Crime Centre (NBCC), Trading Standards and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (London). BHETA marketing manager

Steve Richardson commented: “Working with Scotland Yard on the project is clearly a major opportunity to create a hard-hitting campaign representative of the whole industry.”

…and hosts Meet The Buyer day with Wilko

The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) will hold a Meet The Buyer retail networking day with Wilko at the Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel at Retford in Nottinghamshire on November 13. The event will include the

400-strong home and hardware chain’s whole buying team. Wilko’s listings include home living, kitchen and dining, decorating and DIY, storage, garden and outdoor, cleaning and household, stationery & craft, pet, seasonal, toys and health & beauty. The buyers are looking for

companies who can offer a wide variety of products. Current supplier rationalisation means prospective suppliers must be able to offer multiple lines and garden suppliers need to have drop ship capabilities. BHETA chief operating officer Will Jones said: “We’re delighted to provide members with another great opportunity to schedule face-to-face meetings with the key buyers for their categories. It’s also exciting to be working with a retail partner that literally spans all of the sectors of interest to the BHETA membership.” Participating companies

will be allocated a 20-minute appointment. A maximum of two people from each company can attend and suppliers are urged to use the time available to concentrate on the features and benefits of the products they are offering, supported by cost price proposals. Interested suppliers should contact Helen Farnell in the BHETA member services team on 0121 237 1130 or hf@bheta.co.uk.
