Ready, set, go for Christmas trading T

he nights are drawing in and that can only mean one thing for retailers: the countdown to the Christmas trading period has begun.

But for some, the peak season has already kicked into

gear. Selfridges claims to be the first department store in the world to launch its Christmas Shop, at its flagship branch on London’s Oxford Street, on August 2. On the same day, John Lewis & Partners released its

prediction that 2018 will be the year of the Rainbow Christmas tree, and unveiled details of its seven in-house Christmas colour collections (read our ‘Buyer’s Eye’ feature on page 35 with Christmas buyer Dan Cooper to find out more). Meanwhile, as this issue goes to press, supermarket chain

Waitrose & Partners has reported that customers are already busy planning for the forthcoming Yuletide celebrations. In the week ending October 20, Christmas grocery sales

at Waitrose were up 5%, while sales through its food ordering service, Waitrose Entertaining, increased by more than 13%. Christmas advent calendar sales were up 12%, stollen sales were up 27%, festive fruit and nut selection sales were up 28%, dates were up 23% and mince pies were up 18%.

As our guest columnist Tom Carter

(director of newly-crowned national gia winner Potters Cookshop) comments on page 39: “The pressure is on.” He, too, is busy planning for the festive season, with several in-store events scheduled up to the big day. “These events help keep the public interested and coming through the door,” he points out. “And we will be making sure that every customer who comes in is met with a knowledgeable and friendly staff member, has a great experience, and goes away feeling good about their purchase - because that’s all that actually matters.” We will be spreading some cheer too in our next issue,

when we reveal the finalists of The Housewares Innovation Awards 2019. So best of luck to the entrants – and let’s hope every reader hears their tills jingle all the way to December 25 and beyond!
