Five years ago this month in Housewares Magazine…

• Housewares chain Lakeland planned to launch three branches at the end of the month at the Gracechurch Centre in Sutton Coldfield, the Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, and the INTU Lakeland shopping centre in Essex.

• Homemade jam was back in fashion according to Homebase, with sales of specialist jars, thermometers, funnels and boiling pans soaring by over 2000% in the past year at the retailer.

• The organiser of London trade show Exclusively Housewares confirmed it had a full line-up of exhibitors for its 2014 show – just 16 weeks after the 2013 edition closed its doors.

• London department store Liberty was working with Channel Four to make a three-part fly-on-the-wall documentary series, to be shown in the Autumn.

• Rayware Group’s Kilner brand launched its first ever TV advertising campaign across five channels: More 4, Food Network, Good Food, Really TV and TLC.

• John Lewis announced that its latest ‘at home’ branch was set to open in the Kent town of Ashford in November. The two-floor 40,000sq ft unit was the retailer’s tenth ‘at home’ shop.

• De’Longhi’s Vintage Icona kettle and toaster, and the Gefu Spiral Slicer from Haus were the number one best-selling products at home store chain Leekes and the Gourmet Cookshop at Nantwich in Cheshire respectively.

• Electricals chain Currys PC World reported a 65% increase in sales of all kitchen stand mixers and kitchen machines following the return of the TV series ‘The Great British Bake Off’.
