Upskilling for a modern workforce

T


he construction industry is going through a period of change. Or rather, the sectors around it are undergoing a great upheaval, and to address ongoing challenges – such as low productivity and a projection of 7,300 fewer welders in the UK by 2022 – and to stay competitive and relevant, we must openly embrace the integration of new techniques, technology and equipment into our repertoire. We are referring to everything from BIM-enabled technology and virtual design systems, to the way we join pipe - the total

project lifecycle.


These modern approaches to construction offer engineers, contractors and even owners an efficient and effective way to visualise and conceptualise structures before they ever break ground or start breaking down walls. Once they do, product advancements are making the builds more seamless. But to realise the full potential of these modern approaches they must be paired with workforce education and hands-on training.


Furthermore, as the industry landscape


adapts and changes, workers themselves need to ensure their skills are resilient. Against the background of increasing technological developments many fear a skills gap, particularly in the UK, based both on the movement of labour and highly qualified workers nearing retirement age. In response, experts have called for better training facilities to help boost the number of appropriately skilled workers.
