Greif Green Tool supports customer sustainability goals

First PE film label manufactured entirely from recycled material

his new PE label, manufactured exclusively from recycled polyethylene, is thought to be the first of its kind worldwide. It was jointly developed to market readiness in Germany by the


printer schäfer-etiketten and the self-adhesive materials specialist HERMA, with the aid of the PE film experts of POLIFILM. It made its public debut in Munich at the CosmeticBusiness fair. Half of the “raw material” for the label stock originates from industrial


waste, and the other half from the single-use PE commonly discarded by households, typically in the form of plastic bottles and packaging remains. “This novel label material prints very well no matter what the


technique, from flexo and offset to screen and digital printing,” reports Volker Hurth, who oversees the cosmetic industry business of schäfer- etiketten. “Customers who have seen the samples have given the material an enthusiastic reception, and actual projects and orders are already being processed.” HERMA is likewise delighted with the outcome. Dr Ulli Nägele, HERMA’s head of development, comments, “The material responds well to coating, and the conventional roll sizes can be fabricated without any constraints.”

Klöckner Pentaplast works with Petcore to prove tray to tray recycling

The project started to show clear evidence that post-consumer PET

packaging can be recycled back into more food packaging without the addition of clear PET bottle flakes. This is a pivotal study to encourage recycling of PET food packaging and not just drinks bottles at the domestic recycling collection point. With thanks to successful sorting at Valorplast, this working group with


Petcore Europe has generated a case study in a European country that rPET flake from food trays can be extruded into new PET rigid film, which can then be thermoformed back into pots, tubs or trays. This adopts the ‘Activate’ pillar of kp’s Positive Plastics Pledge, which is committed to driving change at scale through demonstrating the recyclability of the PET trays which will encourage better recycling infrastructure globally, achieving a circular economy. During the pilot, 20 tonnes of post-consumer recycled PET flake has been recycled back into food trays manufactured by kp in Spain.

Curiosities partners with Parkside to introduce compostable VSP film laminate

arkside has developed a unique compostable vacuum skin pack (VSP) laminate for The Curiosities Company’s range of cured bacon - the first pre-packed bacon available in the UK


suitable for home and industrial compostable packaging. The new pack supports The


Curiosities Company’s vision of being a sustainable innovator in the delicatessen industry. Comprising a duplex laminate manufactured from cellulose and bio-polymers, the pack extends the shelf life of the bacon thanks to its hermetic seal and high oxygen barrier design. The compostable laminate is made from tree and plant fibres and is designed to break down within 26 weeks in a home composting environment, gaining accreditation from TUV (formerly Vincotte). The laminate forms the inner pack of the product, contained within an FCS accredited outer pack that is sourced from sustainable forests and is 100 per cent recyclable.
