Safic-Alcan and Dow expand distribution agreement to cover EMEA region for flocking adhesives range


afic-Alcan, an international specialty chemicals distributor, is pleased to announce the extension of its agreement with Dow for the distribution of the flocking adhesives range.

Drawing on the success of the existing agreement for Dow’s other

product ranges, the extension will cover Europe, Middle East, and Africa region (EMEA), effective April 1 2019. The agreement includes such trademarks as POLYFLOCK, MOR-FLOCK,

POLYPRIME and CATALYSEUR CA, which are a series of one or two component flocking adhesives (including primer and catalyst), solvent or waterborne, that bond very well to various elastomers for weatherstrip production. “We are very pleased with the extension of our partnership with Dow for

flocking adhesives,” says Philippe Combette, CEO of Safic-Alcan. “Their leading brands of high performance adhesives will allow us to enhance our product portfolio dedicated to the production of very technical weatherstrip part, a key market segment for our rubber activities.” “The extension of this agreement is testament to the reliability and reach of Safic-Alcan’s network that enable us to offer our customers timely access to Dow’s range of world-class technologies,” adds Ana Carolina Haracemiv, Dow’s commercial director for polyurethanes in EMEA.

Adhesive solution for pallets can help cut plastic waste in supply chain

Manufacturers in the UK looking to cut costs and at the same time contribute to saving the planet from plastic pollution are being urged to try a spot of glue, as an alternative to the sticky solution of using excessive wrapping film for securing palletised goods during shipment. Adhesive pallet stabilisation saves money, cuts waste and avoids damage during transportation and storage, according to Protek Packaging, a supplier of hot melt systems that are designed for protecting goods in transit. Pallets then remain unitised after removing wrap, reducing the risk of potential accidents caused by products falling from high rack storage.

RECYCLED ADHESIVE The adhesive, which can be recycled, is accurately applied by hot melt systems to the corners of cases, cartons or bags during stacking, reinforcing load integrity, saving customers on average a 10th per pallet compared to stretch plastic wrap, with potential savings on disposal costs of up to 70 per cent as stretch wrap is normally sent to land fill. Hot melt systems have functions to bead, swirl or spray patterns that meet specific product shipment or storage conditions, boast simple-to- use controls for precise pumping, dispensing and cut off to make the operation easy and reliable. The adhesive maintains stability on partial and mixed pallets, even when restacked.

Long life; short ingredient list: New vaccuming system keeps food fresh


LAPAK’s revolutionary Delta VACMAP technology is flying, as food manufacturers look for ways of

prolonging the shelf life of fresh baked goods without the use of artificial ingredients and preservatives. “Consumers across Europe and elsewhere

are rejecting products that contain artificial preservatives or have undergone heavy processing in a bid to extend shelf life. Our Delta VACMAP technology, which combines a thermoforming shelf life with a pillow pack presentation, plays into the hands of this trend. In the last two years, sales of this technology have doubled, mirroring the response from the market,” says Christian Ballabio, product manager at ILAPAK. He adds: “We are also experiencing

particularly strong demand from the growing gluten-free sector - these products tend to command a premium over conventional products, so consumers expect a long shelf life and definitely don’t want this to be achieved via the use of preservatives.” By performing gas flushing and vacuuming at the same time, this unique modified atmosphere technology can extend the shelf life of items like fresh

pizzas, croissants, brioche and tortillas to up to 30+ days – normally only achievable with a thermoforming process. At the same time manufacturers benefit from a more attractive, environmentally friendly and cheaper packaging format at a time when plastic waste reduction is a huge focus. “Consumers prefer flow wrap packs to

thermoformed trays because they are lighter and use less packaging material. Retailers like the fact flow wraps occupy less shelf space and allow for easier handling,” says Christian. The fully automatic Delta VACMAP HFFS

(horizontal form-fill-seal) machine combines a modified atmosphere system with long dwell wrapper technology. Products are placed in a carousel unit equipped with vacuum chambers. The vacuum process removes any air from inside the product, then a gas flushing cycle replaces the original volume of air with a gas mix. At this point the system returns to atmospheric pressure, opens the chamber and presents the product to the flow wrapper. The entire vacuuming, gas flushing and packaging process can be performed at speeds of up to 60ppm.

The modular design of the Delta VACMAP

also gives users the flexibility to run frozen and fresh products on the same line. They can simply disable the carousel unit via an automatic cell selection function to operate the machine in by-pass mode, at higher speed as a standard flowrapper. The Delta VACMAP concept offers a number of advantages over thermoforming: the process is continuous rather than intermittent; size changeovers are easy and fast; and feeding of the product can be carried out by a single operator. 
