Cadbury has partnered with Fairtrade on Cocoa Life, a sustainability programme to help safeguard a positive and long-term future for cocoa farmers. Cocoa Life enables all Cadbury products in the UK and Ireland to be covered by a single sustainable sourcing programme.

adbury bars will feature Cocoa Life and Fairtrade on the back of packs, letting people know we are continuing our almost decade-long relationship under a new programme.


OUR GOAL: To deliver real and measurable improvements for 200,000 cocoa farmers and one million community members in key cocoa growing regions by 2022. Cocoa Life is underway in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia, India, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.


AN OVERVIEW AND TIMELINE OF COCOA LIFE SINCE IT STARTED UP Cocoa Life started with the farmers. Founded in January 2008 as the Cadbury Cocoa Partnership, it evolved into the Cocoa Life programme. This was a collaborative process from the beginning: together with cocoa farmers, we mapped out a cohesive programme according to their needs. We want to use our scale as the world’s largest chocolate maker to drive positive change for the communities on which we depend. Through Cocoa Life we are not just a buyer, we are an accountable partner for our cocoa farmers. Everything we do aims to secure a positive and long-term future for cocoa farmers, and ensure the future of chocolate for generations to come. Our ultimate goal is to source all our cocoa sustainably, mainly via Cocoa Life. To achieve our goals, we are getting directly involved in tackling the challenges within the cocoa supply chain, investing in cocoa farmers and their communities. Our holistic and farmer-centric approach works with communities to help them set their own tailored action plans that will deliver the most value for them around these five focus areas: • Farming – helping farmers improve yields and earn higher incomes


• Community – enabling cocoa farming families to create the kind of communities they and their children want to live in


• Livelihoods – improving business skills and helping to develop additional sources of income to lift people out of poverty


• Youth – making cocoa farming a more attractive profession for young people


• Environment – protecting the landscape in which cocoa is grown to maintain ecosystems and farming land for future generations


This is put into practice on the ground through: • NGO partners working with communities to define and implement an action plan, based on a needs assessment. Partners include Save The Children, CARE International, Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), World Vision and Solidaridad.


• Suppliers working with farmers to help them organise into cooperatives (or other groups), providing training and helping them gain access to finance and buy their cocoa for us


THE STORY SO FAR: As of 2018, we had reached 142,875 cocoa farmers in more than 14,000 communities*. In Ghana, farmer incomes and yields have increased in Cocoa Life communities above those in others outside the programme. Our goal is for all Mondelēz International’s chocolate brands to


source their cocoa from Cocoa Life by 2025. Consumers across the world can be confident that the brands they love are made the right way.


INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION: FLOCERT, which works as


Fairtrade’s independent assurance and certification body, verifies Cocoa Life, and IPSOS independently evaluates the programme’s impact.
