How sustainable are hot beverages?


The UK beverage scene has made a considerable commitment to sustainability, both in the sourcing of products such as coffee beans, tea and chocolate as well as in the takeaway cups they use. Here VI investigates what is driving this and some of the strides being made.


According to recent research from BRITA Professional on the opinions of coffee operators, almost all believed that sustainability credentials are important to their customers, coming second only to customer satisfaction. The research further revealed that coffee operators were even


prepared to pay more for a supplier if it offered a measurable impact on sustainability efforts. Speaking about the research results, Sarah Taylor, managing


director of Brita UK, said: “Sustainability in the coffee sector isn’t a new concept, the industry as a whole is dedicated to creating a sustainable supply chain – from the beans right through to the coffee served. “What is new is the significant shift in consumer expectations and


awareness of the climate crisis. Once viewed as a ‘nice to have’, putting the environment before profit is now expected. “For suppliers in the coffee industry, continually improving on


sustainable practices to pass the benefits down the supply chain to operators and meet consumer demand, is an ongoing challenge.” There are many examples of suppliers who are meeting the challenge by introducing innovative products and scrutinising their manufacturing processes. For instance, Italian manufacturer


of coffee products, Lavazza, last year launched its industrially compostable coffee capsules which when correctly disposed of biodegrade to become compost.


Lavazza said most consumers now believe everyone should be


recycling more, but there is still some confusion about how to recycle safely. It said more than a third of people in the UK admit to throwing their used coffee capsules into the bin, because they don’t know how to properly dispose of them. In addition to making the capsules biodegradable, Lavazza took things further by launching a free nationwide composting programme in partnership with TerraCycle for used coffee capsules. This involves a network of drop-off points which can be accessed around the UK, enabling consumers to conveniently dispose of their capsules.
