his signal also carries a Dolby Digital Plus signal, when fully unleashed,
provides amazing reproduction of hi-fi sound. However, have we as an industry provided
every TV purchasing customer with the complete facts of what is actually available to them via their aerial or broadband connection? The obvious answer is no, but not everyone is missing the opportunities. Whilst there have been significant
developments to increase the quality of built-in speakers within flat panel TVs, the limited space available, limits the sound performance both in high quality and spatial awareness. To improve TV sound with the built-in speakers, most, if not all TVs have the setting function to optimize with a variety of settings, whether Standard, Movie, Theatre, or even AI which maps out surrounding acoustics via a short musical interlude.
These settings are fine and probably during the selling process, time is spent explaining the many variations available including bass, treble and equaliser settings. Once home, the majority of customers will
not touch their Settings access, or read the instructions. Unfortunately, the high quality vision may be judged on the poor quality of sound, especially as reported in the newspapers, the soundtracks of Dramas have not been very good via built-in speakers, but seemingly okay on external speakers with a wider frequency range. So at the point of sale, though easier said than
done, what if the customer was offered the option to enhance the full potential of their excellent purchase with an entertaining investment of a surround system? During a conversation with a retailer, should a sound purchase not be made on the day of the TV sale, make a special offering of a Sound discount, valid for a month. Needless to say, the thought of having a large
TV alone can be daunting for many, including partners. Attempting to sell a 5.1 system with boxes and stands and wires as well? Okay, every customer is different, but maybe the approach to the simplistic purchase of ‘plug ’n’ play’ soundbar may be a double whammy? A very satisfied customer who actually listens to enhanced sound of his favourite movies or sports event. Plus,

that extra sale could provide you with a higher percentage profit margin than the actual TV costing hundreds more. Just a thought. Speaking with Matt Nimmons of CEDIA at
a recent event, the question was asked if the independent retailers were missing a golden opportunity by not selling a vision to listen? Maybe that question can be answered by Audio
T, Sevenoaks, Superfi, Nottingham Hi-fi and many other specialists who reap the benefits of selling home cinema surround systems to those retailers who sell their customers a television only. It reminds me of the days during the nineties
when TV and Hi-fi retailers never sold stands / racks. The retailers pointed their customers to the furniture store down the road. Remember the corner units for TVs selling at a few hundred pounds providing the furniture retailer with between 80 and 100 percent profit? Needless to say, as always with the independent electrical retailers, once the profit margin opportunities were identified, retailers made handsome profits selling both TV with a stylish glass stand. It’s clear that the Smart Home is here to stay
PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
as a central theme for both consumers and independent electrical retailers alike. While all these innovations are exciting,
knowing where to start – and how to integrate them into a home – can be overwhelming to many homeowners. That’s where electrical retailers that have a professional smart home arm to their business can help, by ensuring that every device communicates seamlessly with the others to create a cohesive experience tailored to each homeowner’s needs. Sound makes a difference and with the many brands available, consumers will benefit from the difference, as will the retailer. It could be the Sony 5.1 Sound Bar system at around £300 or the LG 2.1 system selling for around £120. There are a mass of available Sound Bars and surround sound packages available to suit most, if not all TV customers. Samsung, Hisense, Yamaha, Denon, Bose, Sonus, Sharp, and many other brands. Stimulating both senses of sound and vision equally makes sense. Listen to the Vision as Sound makes the
