Heading for a ghost town? W

elcome to the latest issue of Innovative Electrical Retailing.

The ghost of a disorderly, some might say chaotic, departure from the European Union continues to dominate the headlines, but to my mind the news that nearly 3,000 shops shut on UK high streets in the first half of this year is just as important. According to the BBC, “a net 1,234 stores shut on Britain's top 500 high streets in the first half of the year, according to research by PwC and the Local Data Company. That is up from 1,123 in the same period last year and the highest since the survey began in 2010.” The town high street should be a vibrant place serving its residents’ varied needs, and while it seems from the data that fashion retailers, estate agents and pubs bore the brunt of the closures, it’s a sobering reminder that small businesses must continue to remain relevant to their customers’ needs and offer value and service that the big chains can’t match.
