With perspectives from Hollywood colourist Natasha Leonnet, Google TV’s Product Lead Fahad Durrani, and tech creator Adam Butcher, the discussions delved into how the trend towards larger home TV displays is making weaknesses in picture quality harder to hide, and how AI is turning the TV from a passive display into a highly personalised entertainment hub, with the next level of immersion hinging on how well display technology, creative intent and intelligent interaction work together. According to an IFA and NIQ analysis, revenue
from televisions above 70 inches increased by 14% during the first half of 2025. As screens grow, the way a television controls light across the display becomes increasingly important to viewers, particularly in night scenes, stadium footage, games and films with strong contrast. This shows the way people watch TV at home has changed and the television is no longer a small screen in the corner of the room. A television has to carry live sport, streaming, films gaming and everyday entertainment, often in the same shared space. Football for example, bigger screens make sense as they make it easier to follow movement across the pitch, but a modern sports screen has to work hard, it needs brightness for daytime viewing and summer evening matches. It needs strong contrast so that floodlights, white shirts and the
ball do not wash out the detail. It needs colour that feels natural, so grass, kits, skin tones and stadium atmosphere do not become artificial. It needs motion handling that keeps up with transitions, long passes, tackles, saves and celebrations. Screen issues like low brightness, poor contrast, washed-out colour or blurred motion are harder to ignore when a TV is bigger. A screen that looks acceptable at smaller sizes feels compromised when scaled up. That is true with live football, where the image is constantly moving and the viewer is asked to take in a wide range of visual information at once. Bigger screens are becoming normal and
better picture quality is becoming expected. Consumers want technology that handles sport, cinema, gaming and streaming without compromise between scale, performance and value.
