Interconnection

Connecting technology in the harshest environments

David Phillips, UK managing director, binder talks about connector challenges involved when it comes to harsh environments

T

he increasing use of electronics technology throughout many industry sectors that operate in the harshest

of environments – agriculture, construction, process engineering plants etc – has placed significant demands on those who manufacture the interconnection systems that provide the basis for power, control and communications.

One of the leading industrial circular connector manufacturers, binder, developed its HEC (for Harsh Environment Connector) for just such applications. Known as Series 696, the HEC connector is

a UL connector with excellent resistance to UV, temperature fluctuations, acid rain, salt spray, ozone and other pollutants. The connector’s design features a

secure, three-point fast locking mechanism with a robust coding system that prevents incorrect orientation. The use of crimp contacts makes for a vibration-proof termination. According to binder, HEC connectors are good for 1000plus mating cycles making them ideally suited for applications that require frequent connecting.

binder Series 696 HEC connectors are manufactured from a tough UL 94V-0 rated polyamide and are waterproof and dustproof to IP68/IP69k which means they can withstand the levels of harsh treatment found in applications like agriculture and construction where the use of high-pressure washing is commonplace. Other applications include traffic and signalling systems, process engineering plants, water purification facilities and recycling equipment. Several contact arrangements are

available including an 8-pole hybrid with four signal gold plated contacts and 3+PE which can accommodate wire sizes from 0.14mm2 to 1.5mm2 (AWG 26-16) – signal and 1.5mm2 to 2.5mm2 (AWG 16- 14) – power. Signal contacts are rated up to 3A and 60V and power contacts to 25A and 400V.

binder’s latest addition to the HEC Series is a power connector capable of handling up to 32A at a rated voltage of 600V. The power connector is available in both cable and panel mount formats with 4+PE silver plated male or female contacts. Another addition is a new panel-mount connector with a hinged cover for maximum protection when not mated. Designed by binder for fast and easy assembly, the Series 696 HEC female connector protects to IP67/IPX9K and can be supplied with 4+PE, 8 (4+3+PE) and 12 silver-plated contacts and features crimp termination. The contacts are rated up to 32A at 600V.
