Redefining AC/DC power conversion and wireless power transfer

Innovative designs for improved efficiency E

ngineers are under pressure to improve the performance of their designs while driving down power consumption, reducing component count and minimizing form factor. This means that conventional approaches to power conversion and wireless power need to be re-thought and new solutions developed. Here, Eggtronics introduce three innovative technologies that address the demands of next-generation power conversion and wireless applications.

QuarEgg: Power conversion to 100W

Targeted at AC/DC power schemes up to 100W, QuarEgg significantly improves the efficiency and reduces the size of AC/DC converters that would traditionally have used active clamp flyback (ACF) and quasi- resonant (QR) topologies.

QuarEgg was the first power conversion architecture in the Eggtronic EcoVoltas family. Specifically developed to deliver smaller, higher efficiency power conversion, EcoVoltas solutions boost the performance of FET switching devices, whether they are based on legacy silicon or materials such as gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). They also drive down no-load ‘vampire’ power and reduce the overall BOM. QuarEgg operates with Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) under all load conditions to

give very flat light-load-to-full-load efficiency curves - efficiencies are up to 95 per cent at full load and up to 92 per cent at light load. Power consumption is further reduced thanks to the ultra-low standby power of less than 16mW. Elimination of a high-voltage, high- side clamping MOSFET minimizes component count and improves reliability, while smooth transient response reduces EMI to simplify filtering requirements.

SmartEgg: Power conversion to 1000W

Eggtronic’s EcoVoltas family also includes SmartEgg, a ZVS solution that enables much higher no-load-to-full-load efficiency and a 50 per cent BOM when compared to the conventional converters in applications in the 75 to 1kW range that need output voltage regulation and power factor correction (PFC). It is also one of the first platforms to support

the new USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1 specification delivering up to 240W of power over full-featured USB Type-C cables and connectors.

Traditional medium-power AC/DC PFC architectures employ a boost PFC input stage and an LLC stage that controls the output voltage. SmartEgg halves the number of MOSFET and magnetic components required by replacing these two stages with a single- stage converter capable of controlling both input current and output voltage. Forced ZVS under every load condition delivers efficiencies of up to 95 per cent at full load and 92 per cent at light load.

Target applications for SmartEgg include adapters and chargers for high-performance laptops and power adapters for PCs, home appliances and TV panels.

E2WATT: Inductive wireless power Offering efficiency comparable with the best conventional wired AC adapters, E2WATT boosts the power, efficiency, distance and data transmission capabilities of wireless power transfer. E2WATT technology reaches up to eight times further and delivers up to ten times the power of existing Qi charging implementations and provides the foundation for taking wireless charging from a few watts to tens of kilowatts - expanding its use into new segments including laptops, AV equipment, and even home appliances and electric vehicles.

Representing a completely new approach to wireless charging, E2WATT is powered directly from the AC mains and is based on just four active devices, no extra magnetics, two coils and a single AC cable. This reduces the BOM by as much as 50 per cent compared to conventional designs while increasing efficiencies from around 70 per cent to 96 per cent. The latter is significant because it means that E2WATT has the potential to replace both wireless and wired charging schemes.
