purpose UAVs that are tethered and can be untethered on command are seeing increased service. These unique hybrid platforms provide the ultimate in mission flexibility. This type of UAV is most commonly used in a security and surveillance capacity. Imagine the scenario where you are maintaining a secure perimeter around your forward operating base using your tethered drone and you spot a suspicious vehicle approaching from a distance and you can’t quite determine if they are friend or foe. You need to get a closer look to determine if defensive action is required. Instead of sending out a patrol to intercept the oncoming vehicle you detach the tethered drone and off it flies to get a closer look and maybe even intercept the vehicle if it is determined to be hostile. This way you can potentially save lives that would otherwise be at risk.
What is the better UAV for military and defence applications – tethered or “drone in a box” approach? Interesting question. To answer this question, it really depends on the application and the desired outcome. A
tethered UAV solution enables you to have uninterrupted service as long as your power source is readily available, but does require some level of human intervention in most cases. Whereas the drone-in-a-box solution gives you more potential range and flexibility and greater autonomous flight
options, but still requires more frequent refueling which means gaps in coverage. There isn’t one size fits all when it comes to drones. The best strategy for using drones is more of a “team” approach. I envision in the battlefield of the future tethered, untethered and drones-in-a-box
will be all connected together to form an impenetrable mesh network. As in any sound defence strategy the key is to employ redundant systems to account for any potential scenario.
