Southern Manufacturing & Electronics Preview

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2018

S

outhern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough from February 6th to 8th 2018 for its 20th anniversary event. Even more significantly, the event coincides with an even bigger landmark for the UK’s longest-running electronics show as it moves into its new permanent home, currently taking shape on the familiar Farnborough site. The

newly-built £35m Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre development is the largest exhibition venue to be built in the UK for 20 years, and one that seems destined to very quickly become one of the most important national showcases for UK engineering expertise. Southern Electronics is by far the largest

and longest-running electronics show in the UK. Roughly half the show’s total 20,000m² floor area is given over to electronics, and covers not just components but subcontract services, consumables, test and production hardware as well. The breadth of suppliers concentrated in one venue make it an extremely attractive event for electronics professionals as it allows multiple sourcing issues to be addressed in a single visit. Moreover, the show’s ever-growing

profile continues to attract an increasing variety of exhibitors, including overseas firms. Since the switch to becoming a three-day show, there has been a significant upturn in the number and variety of overseas exhibitors, particularly in the electronics sector. For visitors, this gives the chance to meet suppliers they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to see at a domestic event.

Nearly half the visitors to Southern Manufacturing & Electronics arrive with components high on their shopping lists, giving some indication of the show’s reputation as a fertile hunting ground for parts and sub-assemblies of all descriptions. With nearly 800 companies from around the world expected to take part in the 2018 show, it seems solidly on

course to maintain its reputation as one of the top buyer’s marketplaces in Europe. The choice of components and parts on show is simply vast. Some of the larger distributors exhibiting for 2018 include Easby Electronics, Optimus Components, Midas Components, BT2000, Azego, Hylec-APL and Telegartner. Also exhibiting again is Transfer Multisort Elektronik, one of Europe’s largest distributors of electronic and electromechanical components. The show is also a great place to

source more specialist parts such as sensors, EMC and RF components. Along with a popular range of products, which includes a 16km LORA module, RF Solutions will highlight its new battery- less remote control systems, capable – it’s claimed - of up to 300 metres range with no additional power source. Believed to be the UK’s largest manufacturer of EMC materials, Kemtron offers a complete range of EMC gaskets, EMC ventilation panels, shielded windows and conductive adhesives, which it will highlight at the show. Some of the many variations on display include gaskets for enclosure applications from conductive fabric over
