So I was very interested when Russell Irvine of Hammond Electronics pointed out that “In an ideal world, the enclosure for a new project would have been selected as early as possible in the design process. In the real world, however, once the design is finalised the first question is normally: “What box do I need for this?” Turn to page 30 to find out what you should consider when specifying an enclosure. Another important consideration is choosing an
enclosure that can actually do the job it’s needed for. As Emma Ryde from Rittal comments in our feature on page 26, “The need for outdoor enclosures is increasing. But with such systems protecting critical infrastructure equipment, why is some equipment still being housed in enclosures that aren’t specifically designed to work in that environment?” So, despite their importance, it seems that enclosures can be more of a last minute decision, and
one that doesn’t always take into account the application requirements. Maybe it’s time to prioritise enclosures, highlight their importance, and think more about the box when designing the contents?
