DEVELOPING A NEW SOLUTION FOR PALLET MOVEMENT

Shorter lead times are essential in a world where consumers and businesses purchase products and technologies and often want them within a matter of hours. The growth in online shopping has been
incredible over the last few years, with fast and efficient supply chains essential. Likewise, production facilities need to be more efficient. To cope with demand, the materials handling systems used in factories and warehouses, for example, need to be both flexible and reconfigurable to keep up with demand. The solutions being developed for these sectors also need to be easy to control and easy to use, with minimal user training. Take themovement of pallets within a facility
as an example. Carried out manually, this is a time-consuming task. However, an automated solution that swiftly moves pallets, in an easily- controlled manner, will have a huge impact on productivity. It is, after all, the material supply that offers huge potential for industrial companies. To help, Interroll has recently developed a new solution it is describing as the ‘missing link in pallet flow’.
INTRODUCING THE NEW SMART MOVER At a recent press conference, Interroll introduced

explains, represents amobile and autonomously actingmaterial flow systemthat can be used, for example, as either a supplement or substitute for forklifts or automated guided vehicles (AGVs). Capable of transporting, sorting and buffering boxes or pallets weighing up to 1000kg, this has been designed as a palletmanagement solution that will help to automate pallet transportation not only aroundmachinery but also when it comes to picking and sequencing processes. Suitable for Industry 4.0 environments, the
systemconsists of variousmodules: the SM1000 Mover mobile unit which runs underneath non- driven conveyor sections and moves the pallets lying on these; and the SM2000 Transfer Car which moves on a rail and can transport pallets between parallel conveyor sections. There are many benefits to the SPM, the
company explains. By using the solution, it is possible to automate work processes in front of themachine production area, reducingmanual labour in safety critical areas; andmanage the pallet work-flow by buffering, sorting, sequencing and carrying at the right time to increase productivity. By eliminating material supply problems at themachines themselves, as well as reducing the possibility of accidents, it is possible to improve productivity by 30% when compared to manual operation, the company states. Furthermore, the Smart Pallet Mover is said
to be extremely easy to install, operate and maintain. The modular plug-and-play solution
can therefore be put into operation without lengthy interruptions to production, even during modernisation projects. Networking capabilities based on global data standards such as REST API and JSON ensure maximum compatibility and ease of use. In addition, the conveyormodules can be reconfigured easily if required, and height-adjustable supports allow the systemto be installed even on uneven floors. “With this platform solution, which is
unparalleled on the worldmarket, we are tapping into the great productivity potential offered by production-related pallet management automation for our customers and users. A user-friendly 3D online tool, the SPM Layout Configurator & Pallet Flow Simulator,makes it possible to configure a systemquickly and easily as well as simulate planned operation on the computer,” explains Jens Strüwing, executive vice president Products & Technology at Interroll.
