from arctic to desert: eddy current brakes suit drilling systems used in extreme environments
On a drilling system, the drawworks consist of a large winch drum, brakes and a power source. This raises and lowers the drilling line as required, often to support the installation of piping as the borehole deepens. Brakes on the system stop the movement of the drilling line dynamically, while an additional friction brake holds it in the top position during the installation of a new pipe, before being released in a controlled manner to allow drilling to continue. Not only are large braking forces required from the system that
stops the line, but the braking of the drawworks can take place frequently – every 180 seconds in some cases. For such braking applications, a frictionless solution is therefore the only option. So, when one global manufacturer of drilling systems needed a
custom eddy current brake to meet the specification of a bespoke drilling rig, it turned to Stromag. The brake required was large and needed to offer reliable functionality in both arctic and desert environments, which are common in the oil, gas and geothermal sectors. Michael Frank, product specialist, Clutches and Brakes at Stromag, commented: “We offer a
standard eddy current brake, the IBV, which is available in a wide range of sizes. After talking with the design and engineering teams at the drilling system manufacturer, and previously providing IBV 110 brakes for a smaller design, it was clear we needed to develop an entirely new IBV variant to suit the requirements of the larger equipment. In the end, we developed an ATEX-rated 6.5-tonne IBV 130 Eddy Current brake that provided a maximum braking force of around 70,000Nm. This ensured optimum performance to meet the customer specification.” According to the company, the IBV is an air-cooled brake which can offer reduced maintenance
requirements compared to a water-cooled eddy current brake in certain drilling conditions. Stromag designed the custom IBV to meet the defined airflow requirements of cooling fans supplied by the customer. This enabled optimum cooling for the system during operation. Frank added: “Our capabilities ensure that we can meet demanding reliability and performance
requirements. For the drilling systems manufacturer, this meant we could deliver a custom solution to an exact specification. This helps to ensure that drilling uptime is not compromised.”

bullet style hinges
Bullet style – also known as ‘corner’ or ‘torpedo’ – hinges have the ability to fit right up to the corner of a panel. The result is an industrial- style aesthetic that allows a large door with a narrow frame for excellent space-saving and easy lift-off door removal. These are available from the FDB Online store. Larger format bullet hinges are often
selected for their traditional flange fixing style and characteristic shape, which is popular for many applications. Simple and robust, bullet hinges are available ex-stock in self- colour, black, or chrome, usually with rear screw fixing, otherwise with through-flange fixing depending on the styling.

As we head towards 2030 and net-zero, there will be greater technical requirements from the automotive industry. The need for joint strength and integrity will remain a critical requirement as manufacturers work to launch new zero-emission electric vehicle models. To help, TR Fastenings has launched a range of Compression Limiters which are designed to meet the growing global demand from multi- sector manufacturers developing products using plastics, particularly in the EV space. Compression Limiters are used extensively
in composites and plastic mouldings as through holes help reduce the stress generated by conventional fasteners. These non-threaded inserts are commonly used in applications where a compressive load is applied to a plastic assembly to prevent the integrity of the plastic being compromised. There are a number of different types
available and, as a guide, TR’s Compression Limiter range consists of symmetrical, flanged, split seam and oval manufactured from steel, stainless, brass and aluminium.

The products are used extensively in electric
vehicles and the battery housings. Newly created giga factories and battery housings manufacturers in Europe, Asia and North America will be looking to include these products in many upcoming automotive research and development projects. While demand for the products has mainly been
driven by the automotive sector, applications in the energy and general industrial sectors, where high load bearing plastic components are used, have also contributed to the surge in worldwide demand.
