FEATURE-PACKED VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE SUPPORTS THE NEEDS OF SMART FACTORIES


Supporting the needs of smart factories, Mitsubishi Electric’s new FR-E800 variable speed drive (VSD) is designed for use in demanding applications. Flexible and compact, this offers multiple built-in networks, including TSN (Time Sensitive Networking) without the need for costly option cards. Using the


Mitsubishi Electric Maisart Artificial Intelligence (AI) system, the E800 reduces downtime with its extended predictive maintenance capabilities featuring the world’s first corrosive gas detection system, the company explains. It also achieves high performance control of induction and permanent magnet motors. With the new VSD, major industrial Ethernet


networks are supported as standard including CC-Link IE TSN, Ethernet/IP, Profinet and Modbus TCP/IP. Network flexibility is also increased with two Ethernet ports which support line, ring and star topologies. To maintain safety and productivity, the E800 can be incorporated into SIL3 PLe, Cat 3 systems.


Integrated safety functionality is featured as standard without the need for an encoder and includes Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Stop 1 (SS1), Safe Brake Control (SBC) and Safe Speed Monitor (SSM). Enhanced, customised,


control is provided by the built-in PLC functionality which is set up via the FR-Configurator2 software.


Multiple VSDs can be controlled by a single master, removing the cost of an external PLC. The E800’s advanced autotune function can be used to control not only standard induction motors but also Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM), Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) and in the future


synchronous reluctance motors, offering maximum flexibility and reducing spares stock holding. With scalable power for application diversity,


the FR-E800 series has output from 0.1kW to 7.5kW, extending to 22kW in the future. Offering benefits to OEM machine builders,


the E800 can be used in industries including automotive, food & beverage, life sciences and water treatment.

MACHINERY PROTECTION


Sensonics has continually developed and refined its Sentry G3 machinery protection system, which is said to provide outstanding protection combined with flexibility of hardware in a single, easy-to- use module type for all sensors. Advanced features include: vibration, position and


speed parameter trending facilities, including log and view of up to 60 days of data, ‘look back’ at trends and alarms, plus download data for further analysis in Excel. It is also now possible to directly view proximity probe gap and vibration transducer bias voltages, to verify correct transducer operation and calibration. The Sentry G3 single module concept minimises the need for


spares holdings, helping to reduce ongoing maintenance costs. It also lowers the risk in retrofitting applications where the need to interface monitoring systems quickly and correctly with previously installed sensors is key. The system is fully software programmable and upgradable which ensures adaptability moving forward as inevitably application requirements change. It’s also easy to expand, simply by adding additional G3 monitors. The system offers up to 24 measurement channels housed in a


compact 3U x 19” rack mounted format which can halve the space needed on existing installations. Multiple outputs are available on the back of the rack for up to three alarm levels and two analogue outputs per channel. Dual redundant Modbus communications to a module level provide a robust communication system, while the in-built LCD display offers readings, sensor integrity voltages, trending and FFT, all important features which confirm the accuracy of the installation.

COMPACT DC/DC CONVERTERS


New from Murata is the UltraBK family of low-profile, fully integrated DC/DC converters. Aimed at space-constrained applications such as IT and network infrastructure equipment, these deliver high energy efficiency, high reliability, low-noise, and fast transient response. The design combines a switched-


capacitor charge pump followed by a smaller buck or boost converter with lower-voltage power MOSFETs and reduced output inductance. The capacitor network provides almost lossless conversion of the input voltage at any ratio, enabling overall operating efficiency as high as 90.5%. According to the company, the output inductor is approximately ten times smaller than for a comparable conventional circuit, allowing the entire converter to fit in a 10.5mm x 9.0mm LGA package only 2.1mm high. Moreover, electromagnetic emission (EMI) is typically 20 dB lower.

HIGH PERFORMANCE CHAIN FOR HARSH ENVIRONMENTS


According to Tsubaki, its Titan Chain is designed to offer previously unobtainable wear life in harsh applications – such as those found in the abrasive and dusty conditions of timber mills, stone sawyers or brickworks. The Chain combines the best features of the existing premium GT4 Winner


chain with new specifications designed to deliver the ultimate in wear performance. It features seamless bushes that incorporate Lube Grooves. The bushes are precision-made and perfectly cylindrical to ensure the smoothest possible operation. In addition, the special Lube Grooves ensure oil is retained at the very point of contact; while the pins have a special coating that provides an extra hard yet low friction surface. As a result of these innovations, maintenance cost and downtime are reduced to a minimum. These factors, plus the reduced frequency of swapping out old chain for new, add up to a significant reduction in the Total Cost of Ownership, the company explains. The development team


specified corrosion resistant nickel plated outer link plates for the Titan Chain which, when combined with black oxide inner link plates, provide an extra layer of protection against corrosion. Tsubaki has also incorporated its process of Ring Coining the connecting links, which ensures that the chain can be specified up to its full load capacity. As standard, the chain is available in sizes 12B to 32B. Additional sizes, multi-
