PROACTIVE MOBILITY PLANNING A DYNAMIC FUTURE
PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY MIDTOWN BUS TERMINAL REPLACEMENT PROJECT
The Port Authority has introduced plans to build a new, world-class transportation hub in Midtown Manhattan which will replace the existing outdated 74-year-old structure, delivering to commuters and residents of the bistate region a state-of- the-art, reliable and efficient connection among our communities. The new facility will include a stunning 2 million square-foot main bus terminal with a light-filled atrium entrance, a separate bus storage and staging building, and new ramps leading directly into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel. The new terminal will add capacity and meet projected 2040-2050 commuter growth, provide a best-in-class customer experience that serves the region’s 21st century public transportation needs, enhance the surrounding community, and will be designed to be net-zero emissions, serving all-electric buses and implementing cutting edge technology throughout. At the end of construction, 3.5 acres of publicly accessible green space will be created on Port Authority property.
Financing for the first phase of the project will include Port Authority capital fund- ing and a Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan through the U.S. Department of Transportation. Future phases will also use Port Authority capital for a significant portion of the cost, funding from air/development
