BUSINESS, CARBON & CYBER: A GREAT DAY AT TRUMPF
The November Job Shop Business Meeting, hosted by TRUMPF at their Luton site, was a brilliant day. I would like to extend a big thank you to the TRUMPF team for their hospitality, slick organisation, and the chance to look around their facility. It’s always great to catch up with fellow job shops and talk shop in a relaxed setting.
The agenda this time was right on the money. We had a timely talk on reducing carbon costs, something we’ll all have to deal with as new environmental legislation rolls in. That was followed by a sobering look at future energy pricing. Energy unit prices are not expected to change that much BUT we do need to plan for the additional charges that are going to be introduced, especially for energy intensive businesses like ours.
Cybersecurity was another hot topic, and rightly so. With threats growing and customers increasingly asking for Cyber Essentials certification, it’s not
just a tech issue, it’s a business-critical one.
Phil Carr of Carrs Welding gave a fantastic presentation on laser and ultrasonic welding. It was practical, insightful, and full of hard-earned knowledge.
After the formal bit, the chat over coffee turned to business. The general feeling? Business is looking good but there’s a big "it depends". At Micrometric, we’ve seen a strong pick up in recent months, but it’s not across the board. Some sectors are still flat, and the future remains foggy.
That said, the mood among job shops was quietly upbeat. Yes, there’s uncertainty. Yes, we’re all juggling costs, staffing, and shifting demand. But the sentiment seemed to be: we just get on with it. And as ever, that’s what job shops do best. Roll on the next meeting and if you missed this one, you missed a good one!
