YUCHEN LIU
Yuchen is a PhD candidate at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton, working at the intersection of laser materials processing and artificial intelligence. Her research focuses on using machine- learning to enable smarter in-process monitoring, interpretation and control of laser interactions with materials for improving quality, repeatability and throughput in advanced manufacturing.

FEDOR CHERNIKOV
Fedor is a PhD student at the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). His research focuses on high-power lasers, primarily developing phase retrieval algorithms using deep learning.

EARLY CAREERS GROUP EVENT AT UKAEA - NOVEMBER 2025
Back in November the Early Careers Group held their biannual event featuring a morning seminar and a tour of host facilities. AILU Steering Committee member, Chris Peters, kindly offered to host the event at UKAEA's site in Culham, Oxfordshire.
As usual the seminar was open to all, and in addition to presentations from ECG members Sean Roche-Watson (University of Manchester), Reshad Bakhtari (Warwick University) and Tom Kerrigan (TLM Laser), AILU Steering Committee member, Mike O'Key, gave a presentation about cutting-edge technilogies at OpTek Systems.
A fascinating tour of the JET fusion facility followed lunch, it was a real priveledge to have access to the area as JET progresses through its decommissioning phase.
The ECG held their meeting in the afternoon which inluded important discussions about gender equality within AILU. More will be developed on this topic in the near future as representatives from the ECG join forces with members of the AILU Steering Committee.
