EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Frederic has carved a distinctive space in the ever-evolving world of techno. As a DJ, producer, event promoter, and co-founder of the Selected Crew, his journey is a proof of passion, resilience, and community spirit. What started as a grass- roots movement among friends has grown into a phenomenon that captures the essence of ca- maraderie and creativity in techno. His versatility and openness have cemented his reputation as a significant force in the European electronic music scene.

Selected represents more than just a collective; it is a symbol of unity and innovation in a rapidly changing industry. Frederic has managed to keep it fresh and impactful by maintaining a strong connection to his roots while embracing change. His outlook on the challenges and opportunities faced by artists and promoters today is refres- hingly pragmatic and forward-thinking. In this in- terview, Frederic shares insights into his journey, the milestones of 2024, and his vision for 2025, offering a glimpse into the mind of an artist who thrives on collaboration and adaptability.

On our interview, we explore Frederic’s back- ground, his reflections on Selected, and his thou- ghts on the music industry. We will delve into his responses to questions about his career, creati- ve process, and aspirations, enriched with quotes and analyses. Let’s journey into Frederic’s world and uncover the hidden reasons behind his artis- try.

FREDERIC’S BACKGROUND: A GRASS- ROOTS MOVEMENT

Frederic’s story began a decade ago when he and four friends launched Selected. as a response to the lack of opportunities for emerging DJs.

“We started Selected 10 years ago when me and my 4 friends just wanted to DJ, and nobody was interested in booking us since we were quite new to the scene, I guess,” he recalls.

What began as a small initiative has blossomed into a collective that blends friendship, commu- nity, and musical exploration.

“Over this journey the crew got bigger including some of my best friends and growing together as a family made me really proud”.

The growth of Selected. Is a source of pride for Frederic. He is primarily responsible for curating parties, while his co-founder Jonas manages the label. This division of responsibilities allows the crew to thrive and adapt to industry dynamics. Frederic attributes much of their success to the bonds they’ve built:

THE UNIQUE IDENTITY OF SELECTED

Selected’s identity lies in its emphasis on commu- nity and openness.

“There was never a proper musical vision or stylis- tic direction on it. It was always about friends and community having a really good time together with an open mind on different types of music,” Frederic explains.

This approach fosters an inclusive atmosphere that resonates with audiences.

Frederic’s ability to curate events that feel fresh and authentic stems from his focus on energy and connection.

“When people come to the parties, they can really feel this special energy of the bond of our friends- hips, and it brings such a nice vibe to the crowd,” he says.

Selected’s willingness to embrace new artists and sounds keeps it adaptable in an unpredictable in- dustry.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVENT PROMOTERS

Frederic’s insights into the current landscape of event promotion reveal the unpredictability of the industry.

“At the moment, every event is unpredictable. So- metimes big headliner events fail quite hard to perform well, and small community events perform big time,” he observes.

This volatility presents opportunities for smaller crews to grow rapidly by focusing on authentic connections and creative programming.
