Volkswagen have stretched their imagination to design aGolfthatshowsthatsize really does matter in today’s marketplace.
The handsome but under stated Golf SV (it stands for Sportsvan) is a replacement for the Golf Plus - a beefed up, slightly larger model which managed to stay under many buyers’ radar, despite the fact that it had been made since 2005 and offered more space and flexibility. When I mentioned the outgoing Golf Plus as a possibility to a pro spective Golf buyer recent ly, he hadn’t even heard of it.
Almost certainly, the SV
will put all that right and make its mark in the popu lar SUV market where ri vals such as the Ford C-Max lurk. The SV - which modestly
doesn’t announce its name on the back of the car (just Golf) - is the third version of Golf
Mk VII after the hatchback and estate. Its trim, spec and engines
match those of its stablemates but the SV steps up from the Golf size-wise - if you want to get out your tape measures, here’s the lowdown:
The SV is 83mm longer
than a Golf; 48mm longer in the wheelbase (creating more interior space); 81mm wider; and 126mm higher (excluding roof rails). This greater inside space provides for extra flexibil
ity - for example rear seats can slide fore and aft by up to 180mm, to increase either passenger or luggage space as required. With rear seats folded
down, maximum luggage space liberated jumps to 1,520
litres of room. So this is a Golf that puts
the emphasis on practicality, though it is immediately rec ognisable as a member of the Golf family. Safety is high on the agen
da and all models now fea ture automatic post-collision braking. Other electronic aids include Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist and City Emergency Braking, all of which are standard from SE spec and above. Fortunately, the SV isn’t
an Aunt Sally of the SUV class and makes an enjoyable and extremely comfortable drive. Ridequalityissecondtonone and a great plus point, while handling is composed, with accurate, well weighted steer ing.
The 1.6-litre TDi version I
drove puts the respect backin- to diesel driving, with plenty of pull in each gear and refined power delivery. Long distance drivers may mourn the lack of a sixth gear for slightly more relaxed high speed cruising but it’s hard to fault in eve ryday driving. Volkswagen
quote 72.4mpg overall but my personal figure was closer to 53mpg, and I’m a conservative driver. There’s also a handy choice
of driving modes from which to choose and the Sport op tion increases throttle re sponse pleasingly. The SV’s in te r io r is*'
Volkswagen at its very best - a smart and very cool look, sharply finished and boasting plenty o f soft- touch surfaces and quality furnishings. A sloping but bulky dash
wastes a lot of top surface space but does at least have a lidded box for extra odd ments - although there’s plenty of room elsewhere with cupholdersandadeep centre console box. Front seats also > feature fold down picnic ta bles behind them and there’s a sunglasses box by the inte rior windscreen mirror. Though lacking dramat
ic road presence, this is very much a Golf in spirit, with that added flexibility and welcome space many families need.
