A councillor remains in hospi tal having sustained poten tially life-changing injuries after being in collision with a caron a ‘‘dangerous" road he has been campaigning to make

safer. Coun. Ged Mirfin, a Conserva tive member of Ribble Valley Borough Council, suffered a serious head injury, a bro ken right leg and fractures to his ankles in the accident on Whalley Road, Billington. The collision occurred at

8-50 am oh Friday morning as he walked his nine-year-old son, Harry, to school. Emergency services in

cluding the North West Air Ambulance helicopter ar rived and the father-of-three was flown to Royal Preston Hospital. Harry, who attends St Leonard’s Primary School,

Ribble Valley councillor Ged Mirfin. (s)

Langho, was unhurt and it is believed the driver of the Re nault Clio was treated at the scene for shock.

Earlier this year, Coun.

Mirfin, who represents Bil lington and Old Langho, had lobbied Lancashire County

Council to introduce traffic calming measures on Whal ley Road. Speaking from his hospi

tal bed earlier this week, the 45-year-old hopes his voice will now be heard tomake the road safer. He said: “I don’t remem

ber anything about the ac cident, but when I regained consciousness, I was told I had lost alot of blood, had stitches to my head and have a broken right leg I “Clearly, this is a busy, dan

gerous road used by parents, school pupils and senior citi zens. Safety measures must be introduced to prevent another accident. The speed limit on Whalley Road definitely needs to be changed.” He added: “I am hoping

they will discharge me this week, although I do need a bit . more practice using crutches. The injuries I suffered could be potentially life-changing,

\ but I’ve had a lucky escape as it could have been a lot worse.”

Coun. Mirfin went on to ex

press his gratitude to the doc tors andnursing staff at Royal Preston Hospital. “I am extremely grateful to

the air ambulance crew and the medical staff at the hos pital for everything they have done for me. “I was admitted to hospital

back in 2011 and was in a criti cal condition after suffering from pneumonia. Therefore, Iamstillvery vulnerable to in fections.” He added: “I’m also thank

ful for the quick-thinking ac tions of staff at St Leonard’s Primary School who looked afterHarryandtookhimtomy mother-in-law’s house while I was being air-lifted.”

Police are appealing for in formation after two raid ers smashed their way into a Whalley jewellery shop and escaped with hun dreds of pounds worth of designerwatches. Armed with a wrench,

the burglars struck the glass several times to shat ter the display window at Sarah Layton Jewellers, in King Street, before mak ing off with the expensive goods. This is the second time

this year the business has been targeted. The latest incident happened at 4 am on Monday. Insp. Hassan Khan,

One of the bur glars is described as wear ing trainers, camouflage combat-style trousers, a light-coloured jacket with the hood up. The second offender was wearing dark clothing and carrying a white sack.” Please call 101 or
