Review: “Ladies’ Day”, per- formedbyClitheroeParish Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society atthe st Mary’s Centre, Clitheroe.

“Ladies’ Day”, written by Amanda Whittington,isahu- morous and at times poign ant play with tremendous

■ warmth, based round the real event of Royal Ascot be ing relocated to York race course in 2005 because of building works. Four workers at a fish fac

tory in Hull decide to go in an attempt to escape from their

• humdrum existence. Their secrets are revealed as they live through their flutter on the horses. The four actors, Gera- lyn Lambert (Pearl), Annie

- Wildman (Jan), Kelly Steed (Shelley) and Amy Prender- gast (Linda) established their characters well very early on and produced real laughs from their well-paced inter: action. Kelly delivers a sharp one- liner as well as anyone and

her quest for celebrity was - convincingly played. Gera- lyn sustained the pace and

actedherpoignantmoments nicely. Amy gave a nice per formance, particularly in her

touching scene with a jockey (Fletcher Illingworth). Annie gave a really good

interpretation of Jan, the most reserved of the four but with a secret “crush”. Her comic timing arid mood changes were beautifully done. Their supervisor was played by Peter Lambert. The slick and very funny

change oh stage into their race-going outfits brought us to the racecourse where they came into contact with various characters. Richard Hubbard played

a suave but rather sleazy TV pundit and Trevor Lord was a convincing drunkgambler. Finally, Brian Haworth

gave a tender performance as Barry, Pearl’s secret lover! This is an entertaining

and heart-warming play and I thought the group brought

ittolifeconvincingly.Theset, lighting and sound combined well although I did wonder if there was some way that the ■ atmosphere of a crowded racecourse could have been put across more effectively. Brian Lawson direct

ed a well-paced and funny evening and my only regret was the number of empty seats on the Saturday night! KIM CROYDON

What’s your favourite website?

bandcamp.com (if you’re in a band and you don’ t have a band camp, what are you playing at?)

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I t ’s a toss up between speaking another language and playing the piano, probably the first one.

What do you miss most about being a ktd? Feeling lonely at school discos.

What’s b e en y o u r fa vou rite event a t The G ran d?

The Fall was nuts and good fun but I also really liked Urban Folk Quartet too. Brilliant band.

When was the last time you were nervous? Last weekend before playing to a crowd o f about 1000 people at ArcTanGent festival.
