Once again a group of 12 vulnerable children from Belarus are enjoying the annual month-longstay with families in the Ribble Valley, thankstotheClitheroe branch of the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children. .


The children are aged between seven and 12 and are staying with local host families. The trip provides an invaluable boost to their immune sys­ tems, which are still suffering from the devastating impact of the legacy of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion.

part in a packed schedule of activity. As well as dental and optician checks, the children have been kitted out with brand new shoes and plenty of clothes - thanks to the gener­ ous donations of local groups and individuals.

Celebrations to markthe 150th anniversary of Clithe- roe Cricket and Bowling Club getunderwaythisweekend.

1864 and-the then Mayor of Clitheroe was the president. Atthelaunch, allmembers


were treated to a round of beer to celebrate the green andgar- dens. Initially, a wooden hut was constructed and in 1979 the bowls hut was made an in­ tegral part of the pavilion. Since then the member­


ship has gone from strength to strength. Club secretary Carol Hol­


lis said: “ In 1975 the firs t ladies’ game was held at the ‘ club. However, as some women were not wearing suitable footwear, they had to play barefoot! “We are all delighted to be


celebrating the cricket, bowl­ ing and tennis association’s 150th anniversary. Special thanks to Castle Cement, Dave from The Castle pub and pho­ tographer Andrew Hale for their contributions towards our special day on Sunday.”
