What qualifications do you need?

Formal qualifications aren’t a necessity, but it helps to have prior knowledge or experi-. ence of social care. I gained a BTEC in Health & Social Care

® and went on to study for a. Higher Education Diploma

forHealth&Care Professions. In addition to these qualifi cations, I undertake regular

, training updates on health " and safety, safeguarding and infection control.

Are there any other requirements for the role? Working as a personal assist- . . ant you provide varying levels

of support to help people live independently in the commu nity, so it’s important to be fit and healthy. Having empathy and understanding is crucial too. When appointed to this role, I was provided with foun dation training and assigned a personal training and devel opment plan.

How long does it take to qualify?

Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care have replaced the Health and So cial Care NVQs and these take between 12 and 18 months to complete. There are options to take a generic pathway or a

specialist dementia or learn ing disability pathway and these again can take up to 12 months to complete.

What starting salary and package can you expect? At Community Life Choices,

the starting wage is £7.50 per hour.

Whatpersonal skills make someone best suited? Some people need support to developandmaintain their in dependence, dignity and con trol. Themostimportantskills you need are empathy, along with the ability to listen and communicate effectively.

What career prospects and structure is there? A career in social care offers long-term employment pros pects,1 with the opportunity for promotion and progres sion to develop your career across public, private and vol untary organisations.

What job satisfaction can youexpect?, {, Job satisfaction is what you bring home with you every day. A comment or.even just a smile from a client makes it clear that you’re valued and are helping to improve some-; one’s quality of life - what could be better than that?
