AY "no" to New Year's resolutions, advises Kathy Reade, chairman of NHS East Lancashire.
A trained counsellor and former social
worker, Kathy is urging us to steer clear of making unrealistic short-term goals for ourselves. Instead, she believes it is important to focus on the good things we have achieved, in order to enjoy a feeling of wellbeing and good health. Kathy, pictured at work, commented:
"January seems to be the time when we all promise to get thinner, stop smoking or change our look. Some of us may achieve our goals. For others. New Year's resolutions become a way to prove to themselves, yet again, that they can't make those changes, as they return to their old ways by February or March, or, for some, by January 2nd!" Kathy revealed her thoughts in her latest
podcast, which can be heard on NHS East Lancashire's website. In each podcast, she shares her pearls of wisdom, based on her professional background and personal experience.
On diets, Kathy commented: "I have found
that being overweight is not overcome permanently by starvation diets - they rarely work long-term. They may be the answer if you have a few pounds to lose to get into your bikini for a week on the beach, but that's all. "The weight has always been put back on, no

matter how well the diet has been stuck to. I think that sticking to healthy food - such as a simple salad or stew - and moderate regular exercise all year round is the way to go." Kathy says that finding love for ourselves is

ourselves could well be beneficial in helping us to truly care for our bodies, with good quality food and healthy exercise."
NHS East Lancashire has services in place to
help people lead a healthier lifestyle, as Kathy explained: "If you want to give up smoking, why not get the wonderful support of the NHS Stop Smoking Services by calling 01254 380424, or text 'QUIT' to 82540. Many people have 'quit for good' with this service. Also, there are local walking groups for companionship, yoga and meditation classes, swimming pools, gyms, as well as the great outdoors, all just waiting for you, some free or not too expensive." Kathy's advice is also in line with NHS East
Lancashire's goal of "Saving a Million Years of Life by 2011". The "SMYL" campaign focuses on six core health issues; alcohol misuse, chronic heart disease, drug abuse, smoking, infant mortality and geographic inequalities. Kathy commented: "By finding some
compassion for others and for ourselves, we may reduce our dependence on fixes like too much alcohol, food and smoking. That is what I wish for you and for me, all year round, and not just for January." To listen to Kathy's podcast, go to:

the frenzy around Lord Northcliffe's suggestion to hold a|| "Flying Circus" in Blackpool as a key point in Lancashire's illustrious history of building aircraft. He goes on to explain the birth
of A.V. Roe's company AVRO, in Manchester, and the firm's success 1 in developing well-known aircraft such as that of the AVRO Anson, the Lancaster bomber and then, after the Second World War, the Vulcan. Meanwhile, in the Ribble Valley Mrl|
Freethy recounts English Electric's building of a site at Samlesbury where Hampden and Halifax bombers were built during the Second World War and the Canberra and Lightning built after, propelling Lancashire to the top of the aviation tree. The book also highlights the struggles of Rolls-Royce Aeroengines and the British Aircraft Corporation during the 1960s before concluding with current projects in Lancashire, such as the Airbus and Eurofighter- Typhoon, which should keep Lancashire at the pinnacle of aviation well into the 21st Century. Mr Freethy dedicates the book "to
