It’s ‘bienvenido’ to Spanish visitors
by Duncan Smith
A TOUR of Blackburn Rovers Ewood Park ground was just one of the highlights for a p a r ty of S panish exchange s tu d en ts spending tw;o weeks in the Rihble Val
ley. Stonyhurst College, at Hurst
Green, has taken p a r t in the Spanish Exchange for the past seven years, seeing i t go from strength to strength. This year the college has been
accepted for a European grant from the Br itish Council to undertake a two-year project. The project is approved by the British Council and the students submit it along with a DVD when completed. The exchange involves 16
“Grammarians”.(Year 10 Stony hurst pupils, aged 14 or 15) who are each paired up with a Spanish
partner of the same age. The visi tors come to England for two weeks in January, followed by a return visit by the Stonyhurst pupils to the school in northern Spain in March, at the end of the Easter term. The Spaniards are from San
Jose Jesuit School, in Durango in the Basque Country. While stay ing at Stonyhurst,- the Spanish group attend lessons with their partners as well as having trips out to places such as historic York, or shopping in Manchester city centre. This year’s activities in college
also included cookery, an intro duction to rugby, a historical tour of the college itself and, a little
• farther afield, a Treasure Hunt around Clitheroe and ten-pin bowling in Preston! Other trips designed specifical
ly to facilitate the progress of the British Council-funded project were to the University of Central
Lancashire (UCLAN), in Pre ston, and to the Darwen premises . of specialist metalworking com pany 'The WEC Group. These trips allowed the -visitors to learn more about an English university education and what prospects local companies offer for young people in today's world. As an added bonus, the trip to
The WEC Group also incorporat ed a tour of Blackburn Rovers’ Ewood Park ground, as WEC is one of the club’s stand sponsors. Several of the Stonyhurst host students are avid Rovers fans and did their best to convert their Spanish partners!- Our pictures show the Spanish
visitors gathered beneath Clitheroe’s library clock tower, ready for their treasure'hunt. They are also pictured with their Stonyhurst hosts enjoying a cookery session in college with Head of Languages Mr Peter Ansell and at Ewood Park, (s)

Frank’s African adventure
A JOURNEY north and south of the African Zambesi was enjoyed by Clitheroe Naturalists. In 1996 and 1997 guest speaker
Frank Duckett and his wife trav elled to where the Zambesi river flows between Zimbabwe and
Zambia. They presented slides of land-,
scapes, birds and animals from a journey.which started in Harare before heading to the lodges of the hinterlands.; .
fABTANo.V4782' Living accommodation was i.
provided in wattle-like huts which were circular with solid floors and enclosed in mosquito nets.
:
mals roamed at night along with colourful birds including exotic varieties of hornbill and herons., Also photographed were the enor mous nests of weaver birds and
Leopards and other wild ani
trees were reduced to battered stumps by 32,000 elephants who wandered freely. The Ducketts journey also
included the Karita Dam where many workers died falling into the concrete used in its construction. On route slides were taken of baboons, giraffes, waterbucks and wild dogs with mottled coats. i On both trips Victoria Falls was
reached - firstly in all its might and on the second visit i t was completely dry apart from an area
along the edge, not an easy task as the rocks were broken and scarred by the force of the waters.. . . , r ■ The border from Zimbabwe to Zambia was crossed with croco diles and hippos presenting dan ger in the Luangwa Valley. Cranes
at one end. The couple were able to walk
in great numbers lined the banks and the river was partly traversed
by canoe. • The last slides were of evening
landscapes, one with an silhouet ted elephant. The speaker stressed that espe-'
dally on this type of tour, where animals such as lions and leopards are at such close quarters, you must remain downwind and have faith in the armed guides. Chairman Muriel Carruthers
thanked Mr Duckett for an informative and -visually excellent evening presented with humourous asides.
• The naturalist's next meeting . _

Search for photogenic four
DID a stranger ask to take your photograph in Clitheroe late last year? Ian Eastham, of Ful-
wood, Preston, is a pho- ^ tographer currently in ' the third and final year of his degree course at the University of Central Lancashire. At the end of last
October and beginning of November, Ian was in Clitheroe to take pictures of people in the town, who he asked to pose in a specific way. The pictures are part
of a Clitheroe-based proj ect he is undertaking for his degree and he has chosen four in particular which he hopes to exhibit a t the Castle Museum
just before Easter. But before doing so, Ian would like to know that the four people in the pic tures have no objection to them being exhibited. All four pictures were
taken at the same loca tion, next to the archway from Church Walk into Market Place, between the Chicken Deli and the White Lion pub. The people in the four
pictiu-es are: • 9 a man, possibly in his late 50s or his early 60s, with silver grey hair a neat beard, steel- framed glasses and smok ing a straight pipe : • an older man, possi bly in his 70s or 80s, with silver hair combed to the
right, smartly dressed in a collar and tie and wear- ing an olive green “Regatta” brand anorak • a woman, possibly in
her 50s, with short light brown hair, wearing a white polo neck with a brown jumper over it and a turquoise “Trespass” brand jacket • a woman, possibly in
her early 40s, with very dark short hair, double piercings in her ears, and wearing a distinctive bright yellow quilted jacket, with large but tons to the side. Please could you call at
the Clitheroe Advertiser office, view the picture to make sure, and give your permission to use it. ■
