Charity sitting pretty after gym raises healthy sum

A GYM challenge organised by Ribble Valley’s Healthy Lifestyle co-ordinator Zoe Pickard and the big-hearted mem bers of Clitheroe’s Sitting Pretty gym has raised £866 for the British Heart Foundation. Less than 13 % of women in the UK do

three sessions of 30 minutes’ moderate exercise each week, so the women of Rib ble Valley were set the challenge of com pleting 30km in 30 days throughout November, using any of the machines in thegym. Zoe encouraged local women to get

active and use the challenge to raise money and keep their own heart healthy. Zoe said: “All participants really got

into the spirit of things and embraced the 30km goal. Everyone was encouraged to set their sights high and burn off as many calories as possible. “I hope all the ladies feel incredibly • proud of their efforts and the improve

ment in their fitness. We are absolutely delighted with the amount we managed to raise for the BHF.” Barbara Dunn, fund-raising volunteer

manager for the BHF in Lancashire, said: “We would like to express our sin cere thanks to Zoe for organising the event and to everyone who took part. All funds raised will make a huge difference to the BHF’s urgent fight against heart and circulatory disease - the UK’s single biggest killer.” : • . If you would like to organise a fund

raising event in support of the BHF, or if you are interested in volunteering oppor tunities in your area, call Barbara Dunn on 01772 455 147 or e-mail: dunnb@ bhf.org.uk. For information about the BHF, log on to www.bhf.org.uk Our picture shows (left to right) Sit

personalised Valentine card (s)

Matt Goodman star in Hall mark Cards' new TV advert which highlight the compa ny's personalised Valentine cards and has been shown on ITV, Skyl and E4. The pair, both members of

staff at the Bradford-based company, were chosen for the clip after answering a plea to staff for quirky stories about how people had found their partners. The Goodmans real-life

romance started more than a decade ago when they met during a paint-balling session where Matt earned his name "peaches" after being shot and bruised on his behind by his now-wife.

A “sym p a th y d a te ” fol

■together a t Hallmark, which has been fantastic, and when we heard about the ad we vol unteered to audition.” He described appearing on

th e small screen in front of millions as “totally bizarre”. Louise Hudson, digital busi

intended to be the first of its kind; a real life love story for Valentine's Day. “I t is aimed at highlighting

our personalised card service in which people create a card as unique as the one they love by uploading favourite photos, changing text and even includ ing those names you call each o th e r when'no one else is around!"

A G U ID E dog p u p p y h a s been in ju red a f te r being h i t b y a fast- moving cyclist on a po p u la r route for walkers in Clitheroe. The Seven-month-old black labrador

called Carlton was out with his volun teer puppy walker Sue Whitehead last Tuesday afternoon when he was hit by the lycra-clad cyclist. Now! M rs Whitehead', who has

helped t r a in guide dogs for many years, is calling for respect among all those who regularly use th e route between Four Lane Ends and Barrow which passes Standen Hall. She said: “I was walking along the

route, which is very p o p u la r with walkers and joggers, with Carlton when a l l of a sudden two speeding cyclists came round the bend towards us. I put iny hand up and asked them to slow down and told the dog to wait, but one of the bikes collided with him. “Carlton could not bear weight on

his paw or walk and my car was a 20- minute walk away.” Mrs Whitehead rang the police and

asked for assistance, but eventually a passing runner came to her rescue by returning in his vehicle to take the pair back to their car. “I would like to thank the man, I

only know that his name is Mike, but for him I don't know what I would have done,” said Mrs Whitehead. “That track is used by a great deal

of people and the speed of those bikes was n o t appropriate, i t could have been a child that had been injured. “I feel strongly th a t the area should

be used sensibly.” Although initially concerned th a t

Carlton's injuries could have threat ened his future as a working guide dog, he was eventually diagnosed with nothing worse than a soft tissue injury to his shoulder and paw. Mrs Whitehead said: “ I just want

people to try and be responsible and respect all those who use the route. “I would also like to prick the con

science of those who were involved in this incident into making a donation to the Guide Dogs charity towards the vets fees.” Our photograph shows Mrs White- head and Carlton.

Grants to boost performers of the arts

YOUNG dancers, thespians and musi cians in the Ribble Valley will benefit from a new coimcil grant scheme. Cash for equipment and tuition to

help youngsters excel in their chosen field is being made available through Ribble Valley Borough Council's arts excellence grants scheme. The initiative follows in the footsteps of the borough’s sporting excellence

; grants programme which has supported ; young Ribble Valley athletes at county and national level. Coun. Robert Thompson, chairman

of the council’s community committee, said: “The biggest issue for young peo ple and their parents in pursuing their chosen activity is the cost of instruction, transport and equipment. We hope that by providing support towards these costs, young people will be able to reach their full potential. “We have offered financial support to

talented young sports people for some time and i t is only fair th a t the same support is offered to youngsters showing excellence in the arts.” • Grants -will be available from April

2010 for dance, drama and music (instrumental and voice), with priority given to those with a strong track record. in their chosen discipline and working towards formal qualifications.
