using an aeroplane equipped with the latest thermal imaging equip ment to identify “hot spot” areas across Lan cashire where buildings are losing the most heat. With official statistics

FAMILIES and firms in L an c a sh ire could save money, thanks to an innovative energy survey about to “take off” in the county. The survey will involve

has been completed, work will s ta r t in the target areas to show households and businesses how they might be able to take advantage of free or low- cost measures - such as loft and cavity wall insu lation - to help cut their energy bills.

showing that half of the heat lost from a typical building is through the walls and loft, this survey will identify those areas with a real problem and help to create “greener” and more energy-efficient homes. Once the initial survey

Cavity wall insulation

can significantly reduce the amount of energy needed to heat a home and can save around £115 ■ a year on fuel bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust; Insulating a loft can

save around £150 per year on energy bills if no insulation is there at the moment. If you already have some insulation then topping it up to the rec ommended minimum level of 270mm can still save you money. Commenting on the .

launch of the survey. County Councillor Tim Ashton said: “Cutting down on energy use makes sense at all times, and in the current eco nomic climate anything we can do to help families and firms to cut costs is very welcome. “The broad range of

partners involved in the project means there are a range of grants or help available for homeowners and businesses to save

energy and money. By undertaking this high- tech approach, we will make sure th a t future work and grants are tar geted effectively.” To offset the small car

bon emissions from the survey flights, the county ' council will also make a contribution to the Lan- cashire-Gulu Carbon Compensation Scheme. The survey has been

funded with contribu tions from the 15 councils in Lancashire, including Kibble Valley Borough Council, as well as the- Energy Saving Trust and the Northwest Improve ment and Efficiency Partnership. • The aerial, image

Leaner burn cars on the way

CAR drivers are getting more miles to the gallon out of their vehicles, with big improvements still to come. MEP CluTs Davies, whose North West

constituency includes Kibble Valley, says that fuel efficiency is set to increase by 20% over the next six years. Car manufacturers are gearing up to

meet the requirements of a new EU law which forces them to reduce C02 emis sions from the fuel their cars burn. Latest figures for the 12 million cars

sold in Europe in 2008 reveal that aver age emissions were down by 3.3%, the largest fall since records began a decade ago. _■ ■ Liberal Democrat Mr Chris Davies,

who helped negotiate the new law, says that the manufacturers are introducing long overdue changes. He said: “They were slow to start, but

car builders are now being forced to emb C02 emissions.

“Vehicles are becoming more fuel effi

cient and this will help to keep down the cost of driving.” Average emissions from new cars sold

in the UK during 2008 stood at 158.2 gC02/km compared to a European aver age of 153.5 gC02/km. Across Europe currently 47.3% of car

sold are fuelled by petrol, 51.4% by diesel, while just 1.3% use alternative power sources.
