Sixth Form Awards Excellence
Burnley College’s outstanding sixth form students were recognised at a prestigious event held in the imposing surroundings ofTowneley Hall.
TheCollege’s ‘Awards for Excellence’ were presented for high academic achievement and success in national competitions.
2009 was another exceptional year for Burnley College students with a 99.5% pass rate on A Level courses and a 100% pass rate oh Advanced Vocational courses for the fifth year in a row. Over 350 students from the College have now progressed to university.

The students .and their family members were joined by a host of specially invited guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, head teachers of local high schools, county and borough councillors, representatives from the Learning and Skills Council and the University of Central Lancashire, local employers and the College’s governing board.
The evening commenced with a welcome address by Chairman of Governors, Shelagh Derwent, an introduction to the awards by College Principal, John Smith, and an inspirational view of life as a Burnley College student by Smdent Governors, Brent Bannister and Imogen Sutton. Brent achieved four As in his A Levels and has now progressed to Bristol University to read Computer Science. Imogen has just begun the second year of her A Level studies.
The awards were presented by former A Level students Adam Lane and Lindsay
- Hiist. After completing his A Levels at the College, Adam studied Mathematics at the University of Manchester and graduated with a first class honours degree. He then joined PricewaterhouseCooper’s graduate actuarial training scheme and now works in their pensions and investments division. Lindsay smdied Psychology at the University of Central Lancashire and is now studying for a Masters in Forensic Psychology at the University. She hopes to work as a professional psychologist in prisons.
Andrew Haworth, who studies Advanced level Music at the College, entertained the guests with a musical performance.
When congramlating the students on their outstanding achievements, John Smith, Principal of Burnley College, recognised the encouragement of parents and the dedication of College staff.
“The outstanding success of our sixth form students deserves special recognition and that is what this event is about. I am immensely proud of our awards winners who have achieved something special but I am equally proud of the many young people who have worked hard and achieved their goals with us this year.”
