CLITHEROE Wolves UlOs maintained their 100% start to the new season, with impressive back-to-back home victories over Langho Juniors and Oswaldtwistle Rangers respectively. Clitheroe took the lead

against Langho through Owen Jackson, then a double from Elliot Watson put them in a commanding position. The tie was put beyond

Langbo when James Scorah added a fourth late on. Against Oswaldtwistle the

deadlock was broken after 10 minutes through an own goal. This seemed to spur

The right recipe?

CLITHEROE Wolves U16s’ league team has kindly been sponsored for a football strip by The VUla, the Italian restaurant in Whalley Road, owned by Piano and his wife Caroline. The team and the managers Graham Tomlinson and Jim

McGrath are very appreciative of the sponsor from The Villa, as now the team looks a good rep resentative of Clitheroe Wolves and look smart in their new Stanno strip. Could it be the new recipe for

success?

Clitheroe’s Andrew Pearce inflicted defeat on local rivals Padiham at the Arbories. The four wicket win came courtesy of

Pearce’s tremendous bowling display (5- 37) as he tore through the opposition bat ting line and this was coupled with a trio of impressive batting displays, that sent Clitheroe flying to victory. Professional Paul Turner hit five fours

and three sixes on his way to 47 before his wickets were scattered by Qadeer Ahmed and opening partner Neil Bolton smashed 45 which included nine fom^. Josh McDowell then hit six fours and a

six to reach an unbeaten 46, which, along side a number of low-scoring colleagues, was enough to secure maximum points. Padiham pro Kashif Siddique capped

another fine season with figures of 3-52 which sent him to second in the Veka Rib- blesdale Cricket League wicket-taking charts on 92 behind Baxenden professional Babaar Naeem who finished with 103. Clitheroe’s efforts were in response to the

162 set by the home side. Siddique claimed an impressive all-round performance with 27 runs which again ensured he finished second in the league’s charts with 1,449 runs. The prolific professional was once again thwarted by the champion’s Naeem who ended the season with 1,589 runs. John Bushell went on to score 26 while

Philip Metcalfe (14), Steve Meehan (13) and Gavin Kelly (10) also finished on dou ble figures. However, Andrew Pearce’s efforts and Joshua Marquet (3-25) ensured that Padiham didn’t reach that formidda- ble scoreline. The residt meant that Padiham finished

fourth in the table while Clitheroe ended a disappointing campaign second bottom with 106 points.

Cricket A FABULOUS five wicket frenzy from

A FANTASTIC four from Chatbum’s Mark Glover set the tone for his side’s final game of the season as they top pled Ingrow St Johns. The home side struggled from the

very first ball and T. Weston’s exit at 1-1 soon became 2-2 when I. Mehban became Glover’s second victim in as many minutes. W. Hussain tried to add a bit more

respactability to his side’s tally but he was also thwarted by the in-form bowler after hitting 17. Glover’s final victim was P. Wright (9). S. Iqbal (10) and C. Bottomley (19)

put on the best pairing for the home side with a 28-run partnership but that was their only highlight as they feu for just 94. Ashley Bennett also got in on the

aiction for the visitors, claiming figures of 2-14.

READ ended an encouraging season with defeat at Ribble Valley neigh bours Ribblesdale Wanderers on Sat urday. _ But their third-place finish repre

sents another season of improvement, and a decent performance from a squad that didn’t have the depth of other clubs, while Wanderers toU be looking for better than ninth next time out - although th a t was two places higher than last term. • Read professional Jon Harvey, who

is expected to return to Whalley Road next season, ended with 736 league runs and 54 wickets, while there were

sixes on his way to 48 whUe Wadding- ton hit an unbeaten 28. Ingrow St Johns attempted to bam

boozle their opposition by employing as many as nine bowlers at the crease but it proved to be a tactical failure. The win gave Chatbum the points and ensured a fourth place finish in

other notable contributions from Joe Marshall, with 745 runs, Chris Holt, with exactly 500, while Andrew Rush- ton (41) and Warren Eastham (50) wickets also chipped in to good effect. Saturday wasn’t the side’s finest

moment, shot put for 105, before Wan derers eased home by two wickets with 10.1 overs to spare, but again there were displays of merit.

■ Wanderers won the toss and insert

ed Read, and they soon had the visi tors in trouble at 49-7, with home pro fessional Jake Brown and Ian Brit- cliffe impressing with the ball. However, 18-year-old Elliott Art-

Mahmood who'smashed nine fours and two sixes before finishing on 80 as he was caught by Tony Helm from a fierce Mulheam delivery. John Greenwood also hit 44, while

Mark Jagger and John Butterfield both stmck an unbeaten 29. That sent the away side soaring to a

213 run advantage which meant it was going to be an uphill struggle once Chatbum strode into bat. Mark Neremberg hit 42 for the

Preston grab the lead again, but Chipping responded well, and good play in midfield found substitute James Holt who fired an unstoppable angled drive across the keeper and into the bot tom comer. Chipping started to

dominate in all areas, and the winner arrived with five minutes left, from skipper Jonny Fletcher. I t ’s back to league

action on Saturday as Chipping welcome Hoghton West End to the village (2-30 p.m.).

Grindleton’s late stunner

Grindleton..................2 Rolls-Royce................ 4 GRINDLETON had high hopes of turning over leaders Rolls-Royce, but lost out to two late goals. The locals made the

brighter start, and when winger Martin Dobson was felled at the edge of the area, debutant Danny Sharpies curled a superb free-kick home. Ten minutes later, the

lead was doubled when captain Scott Fielding threaded an immaculate ball through to the returning Dan Fawcett, who finished confidently. But the away side

started to claw their way back into the game, and were level by the interval. In an evenly-contested

second half, the away team enjoyed a large period of possession with out creating any clear-cut chances. I t was confirmed it

wasn’t going to be Grindleton’s day when Rolls scored two goals in the last 10 minutes, again from corners after poor marking in the box. Grindleton look to

bounce back at Long Lee Juniors this Saturday.

Woe for Whalley on the final day

CRICKET: A brave bowling dis play was cancelled out by a below par batting performance as 'Whal ley slid to defeat against Cherry Tree on the final day of the season. The home side’s chances of tak

ing maximum points from this ■Veka Ribblesdale League fixture diminshed early on with too many batsmen offering too little.

Joseph Rahim top-scored with

17 while Martin Davies was the only other batsmen to achieve dou ble figures with 13. Darren Broom (5-26) and Andreas Sudnik (4-16) did the damage for the visitors. Chasing 91 in reply, Cherry Tree

started brightly but bowlers Declan Fitzhenry and David O’Neill did all they could to pre

vent them reaching their target. Stephen Elwood top-scored with

32 from just 20 balls while Broom struck 20 and both Mark and Scott Friend hit 12. But Fitzhen- ry’s (4-40) and O’Neill’s (3-28) efforts were to no avail as their opponents surpassed their target. Whalley finished third from bot tom in the league table.
