‘Gutted’ boss Smith in need of a cutting edge

CLITHEROE manager Peter Smith has admitted that his Blues side have been lacking a cutting edge as they were subjected to a second consecutive defeat on Tues
day evening. The Shawbridge outfit had their FA
Cup rim halted in the first qualifying round by UniBond Premier League liigh-fliers Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday, after goals from Mark Ward and Andy Ring secured a 2-0 win. Then Smith and assistant Kenny
Mayers were given an imwelcome and frustrating return to Irongate as the 10- men of Clitheroe - a result of striker Jerrome Matthews’ 20th minute dis missal for two bookable offences - con ceded in injury time when substitute Phil Eastwood bundled the ball home to give Bamber Bridge all three points. Michael Jones said: “We’re delighted to have secured Dean’s services. “He’s a former com

“But when luck is going against you, turn around.
We have been lacking that cutting edge as well recently. We have been dominat ing a majority of our fixtures but we have just not had that killer touch.” The Blues have only failed to score in
three of their ten fixtures so far in all competitions, but have only recorded three wins; with just one in the Uni- Bond League First Division North, which came on the opening day of the season against Warrington Town. Smith added: “On Saturday in the

FA Cup we hit the bar, had three chances cleared off the line and missed a number of clear-cut opportunites. We have got to be more ruthless in front of goal if we are going to win games. I t’s important that we take our chances when they come. We are not playing badly, we just have not had much luck. “But football evens itself out and oiu"
performances will eventually be reward ed.
“Soon it will be us that snatches a
last-minute winner, get a dubious goal or have one bounce in off someone’s backside, but until then we will keep on going. “We need to make sure that we are on guard until that final whistle is blown.”
Tuesday’s match against Bamber
Bridge also saw the familiar faces of Neil Reynolds and Craig Sargeson lin ing up for the opponents. Reno, a fans’ favourite at Shaw
bridge, said:’ “I t was hard on them because they did not deserve to lose the game. I thought they played well with 10-men but we were able to nick it at the end. “I was obviously delighted with the three points but really felt for Peter and
Kenny. “I thought Clitheroe performed well
and looked a good outfit. “Peter and Kenny have done a great job there and they will turn things
around. “They have got Clitheroe FC going in
the right direction.” The Blues will now go on to face
Trafford at home on Saturday, and Smith hopes that he will be able to land a new striker before the game. He added: “I ’m hoping to bring
someone in before the weekend. “I ’ve got an idea who I want to bring in but I don’t want to name names just
yet. “He’s played for Gretna in the SPL
and has moved back down this way. He has a good pedigree and has always scored goals.”
