WADDINGTON recorded their first points of the campaign with a comprehensive victory. The away team were in front
within five minutes through Hopcroft’s bullet header. Par sons increased the advantage when his 30-yard effort bamboo zled the keeper.
The locals squandered
chances to add to their lead, including a missed penalty after the break. But with 20 minutes remain
ing, Ibrahim blasted the ball past the keeper to seal the win. Frost completed the scoring
with the last kick of the game. Waddington are next in action at Skipton Town.

thimderous volley. Darnell sealed the win, turn
ing to hit a first-time shot into the top left hand comer, and the scoring was completed when Parkinson was unselfishly set up to round the keeper and slot in. Waddington Reserves are

Hutton hammered! Rugby union
TEMPERATURES soared at Littlemoor on Saturday as Clitheroe hammered Hutton. To match the weather, the
rugby played by the men in maroon and gold was scorching at times. Oliver McEntyre’s men were
merciless in attack, resolute in defence and played rugby right
I up until the final whistle as they put their opposition to the sword. As early as the third minute
: Lafranceschina received the I ball at inside centre and jinked I in to score a try and make the i score 7-0 with the conversion. Clitheroe piled on the pres-

★ DOG Inn were unable to build on their winning start to the season as a sec ond-half capitulation saw them crash 5-1 to newly-promoted Duke of Wellington at Wilson’s. The Whalley side
early in the second half when substitute Mark Lord finished coolly, but then imploded as they gifted their oppo nents four soft goals.
had the better of the first half, but they found themselves a goal down at the interval when a com plete breakdown in defensive communi cations gifted the Great Harwood side the lead. Dog equalised
which was duly converted and the score ticked on to 21-0. When the first 40 minutes
was up there had was a further try apiece for stand off Peel and full back Dickinson and the conversions were added by Lafranceschina to give Clitheroe a 35-0 half-time lead. Hutton came out firing in
the second half, and in the first 10 minutes they attacked the Clitheroe line. There was some resolute
defence to keep them out, but eventually Hutton were
rewarded for their efforts with a try that was converted to make the score 35-7. Tries followed for Peel (2), Lafranceschina and Dickinson as well as a try to reward the forwards for all their hard work, Rigby managing to touch down after all the hard work was done for him by his forward colleagues. The final score was 66-7 to
the home side. Clitheroe firsts travel to Vale
of Lune on Saturday. Vale lie immediately below
Clitheroe with both teams hav ing won one and lost one. Meanwhile, Clitheroe Cava
liers travelled to Orrell in then- first away game of the season. I t was left to a number of
fledgling players such as Mark Piercy, Matt Bleasdale and Tom Redfeam to set the stan dard, with some immense tack ling and general all round play. They set the tone which the
majority of the senior players couldn’t match up to. As for the game, Clitheroe were outclassed in all areas by
a strong opposition who were menacing with ball in hand, recycled well at the tackle area and were thorough in defence. The 94-0 scoreline reflects

Ackers finds the energy at Clitheroe
AS the Autumn leaves fall and the days become shorter, Clitheroe Golf Club produced a power surge with the annual competition for the Min ers Lamp. Steve Ackers found the
energy with eight pars and one birdie in his back nine to generate 40 points and claim the prestigious trophy. Miles Corish scored 23
points on the outward nine, but a blob on the 16th cost him the title as he fell one short of Ack ers’ winning score. ■ Four competitors on 38
points were headed by Andrew Fish, who fin ished strongly to take third place after a card play-off.
Golf Giles Shaw’s highlight
was a birdie on the 11th in his 38 points total for fourth. The
remarkable
Andrew Heesom, off one, claimed fifth ahead of Barry Thomas with the same score. Garry Byrne got his
reward for 36 points with the best gross. Sunday’s Fourball Sta-
bleford was another lucra tive outing for Heesom when he and playing part ner Mike Tattersall took the spoils with 44 points. Jeff Crowther and John
Fryer got the better of a card play-off with Dominic and Daniel
Preedy for second place, both couples returning 43 points. The seniors were at it
again last week in the Monthly Sableford, and the handicapper finally caught up with Chris Sims as he took first prize again with 37 points. Brian Stokes took
home more prize money with a steady 34 points for second place, and Douglas Woodburn pipped Richard Walsham for third place after cards, with both scoring 33 points. Eddie McGarry and
Richard Read shared the Twos pot, and Woodbum and Walsham became the last two qualifiers for the forthcoming Advertiser
and Times Trophy Final in October. A Gents’ Open Team
Event at Clitheroe result ed in a win for Blackburn Golf Club’s Andy Nor man. and playing part ners I. Murray, M. Rolfe and M. Craven, taking first prize with 85 points. Clitheroe’s high flyers,
Tony Flanagan, Simon Swindells, Steve Ackers and Alan Henderson took second prize with 82 points, a two-shot margin over third-placed Denis Greenup, David Heesom, Ian Walsh and G. McGuire. Ralph Postlethwaite eagerly awaits the winner of the Clive Wood/Peter Catlow semi-final game to do battle for the Men’s
Singles Knockout Final, and Jeff Crowther beat Jack Simmons in the Dennis Kershaw Putter semi-final for the right to meet Keith Allen in the final. On Thurday, Septem
ber 24th, Clitheroe Golf Club hosts the Marina Dalglish Charity Golf Day. There will be a shot gun

Hurst Green............. 1 Rimington................1 A CRAIG Dewhurst penalty midway through the second half earned Green a deserved point. Both teams signalled
their intent with some ferocious tackling in the early exchanges, but it was the home side who had the first chance of the game as Brunskill’s early chip almost caught out keeper Kershaw. Rimington had the
best of a poor first half, and tested Addicott with several decent crosses. The visitors opened the
scoring on the half-hour as a Hurst Green miskick allowed Dinsdale to cross well, and Danny Green stabbed home. Hurst Green started
the second half with a lit tle more pace and tried to play some football, but all too often there were passes mis-placed and possession surrendered. They were also to be
denied a spot-kick when Brunskill was released and looked to be hauled back inside the box by the last man. With the home side
edging possession, they were struggling to create clear chances, but they were handed a lifeline with a soft penalty. Dewhurst went down
following a Paul Anthony challenge, and to every body’s siuTJrise, the refer ee deemed it a penalty. Dewhimst picked him
self up to drill home and equalise. The visitors responded
well and should have gone 2-1 up, but man-of- the-match Aspinwall cleared a shot off the line to keep the scores level. All in all a point was
probably a fair result, with neither side showing enough real quality to win the game. The draw means Green
still only have the one win to date, and keeps Rimington top of the table. Hurst Green travel to
struggling Borrowdale on Saturday, kick-off 2-15 p.m.
