A RARE bright, sunny day saw 25 members of Clitheroe Ramblers set off from Earby for a 10-mile circular walk led by James Jolly. Heading north through green
pastureland, passing Batty House and Booth Bridge, they arrived at the small hamlet of Elslack, where a welcome drinks stop was taken before starting their first chmb of the day. Following Moor Lane to Stories
House, they turned south, walking around Elslack Reservoir before entering Stanrise Plantation for
some welcome shade. On leaving the forest they followed moorland tracks, covered with a glorious dis play of heather, to the top of Rans- able Hill, the highest point of the day, for some wonderful distant views. Upon joining the Pennine Way
at Kirk Sykes Farm, lunch was taken in a sheltered spot with such wonderful views, including Lund’s Tower, Wainman’s Pinnacle and the Hitching Stone that it proved hard to resume the walk. Finally, they set off again, reach

ing Tow Top Lane before descend ing into and walking through the village of Lothersdale passing the fishponds at Raygill on the way to Centre Road. The second climb of the day
brought them to the edge of Thornton Moor, skirting around to Standridge Clough Lane, and fol lowing this for the last mile down hill back into Earby. The sun had shone all day, espe
cially on the seats outside the local pub for a refreshing drink after wards.

cil’s director of development services, Mr Stewart Bailey, said: “ The Pennine Lan cashire Squared project has offered the people of Clitheroe a great opportuni ty to consider how long last ing improvements to public areas o f the town centre might be made. “DSDHA showed how well
they had recognised Clitheroe's most valued qual ities and how these could be further enhanced. “ The key task is now to
build together these ideas into the outcome o f the Clitheroe Masterplan proj ect, which is now well under way.” The chairman of the judg
ing panel, Stirling prize-win ning architect Stephen Hod- der MBE, added: “The con text for the Pennine Lan cashire Squared competition in Clitheroe was a challeng
ing one; a reconsideration of the Castlegate entrance to the castle, the historic Mar ket Place, and the current market and associated car park, all within the conserva tion area. “The proposal by DSDHA
recognises that these specific areas need to be contained with an effective masterplan for the town. “ It focuses on how effective
and attainable linkages can be noade between the market and Castle Street via existing ginnels, and proposes a con sidered palette of materials for upgrading them, together with tree planting.” Elevate and officers from
the borough council are now approaching a range of organisations and agencies to identify funding and are working with DSDHA to develop the design team’s ini tial ideas into a design brief
For better or worse... Peter’s talk
THE July meeting of the Ribble Valley Family History Group was a talk by Peter Park entitled "For better or worse" and as the title suggests was about marriage. Mr Park gave an interesting and
informative insight, covering how to look up records, legal ages for marriage and marriage customs over the cen
turies. In August, members visited Whalley
Abbey and, despite it raining, had a tom- of the ruins led by family history group member who is also an Abbey
guide. The evening ended with a most wel
come hot buffet. The next meeting is on Tuesday, Sep
tember 8th at 7-30 p.m. at Clitheroe Cricket Club and the subject is “ Lancs/Yorks Railway” , by Noel Coates. Visitors are always welcome.
Drink-driver not employed by school
AN article on page 23 of our August 20th edition reported the prosecution for drink-driving of Linda Simpson (49), of Old Langho Road, Langho, who was described as “ a member of staff” at St Leonard’s Primary School, Langho. The school has asked us to point out
that Mrs Simpson worked there as a kitchen assistant and was not employed directly by the school, but by Lancashire
County Council’s schools catering service. On the day of Mrs Simpson’s arrest
there was no contact between the police and the school, which was imaware of the situation. Police officers did not enter the school, but, acting on information received, waited nearby and stopped Mre Simpson as she drove away. The school is investigating the matter in conjunction with Lancashire County Coimcil.

We hope that oiu- design approach shows respect for Clitheroe’s past, whilst simul taneously creating new opportunities for its cultiual and commercial renewal.
