Wadd are just gr-eight

WADDINGTON Reserves carried on from last week’s easy victory with another convincing win, 8-2 at Bradley.

| Waddington opened the scoring

after 15 minutes when a delightful free-kick was met by Parkington to guide into the bottom comer. It was soon 2-0 when player/man- ager Matt Day ileapt like a salmon

to head homa I From another free-kick, Cengiz

Avci reacted first to beat his marker and dispatch a lovely left-foot vol ley into the top comer. Waddington created plenty more

chances, and from one of these a Bradley defender handled on the line and was sent off.

Sieczkowski confidently stepped

up to score from the penalty spot. Bradley then got a goal back

when captain Avci was harshly pim- ished for an innocuous challenge in the penalty box and they made it 4- 1 from the spot. Parkington scored his second

with a deft chip over the keeper, and secured his hat-trick with the goal of the game, a delightful chip over the keeper from the halfway line. Bradley scored another consola

tion goal when their striker volleyed home. Waddington then upped the pace,

dominating completely and added two more to end deserving 8-2 vic tors.

CLITHEROE Wolves Under 10s won the annual Bispham Junior Football Federation tournament on Bank Holiday Monday. No fewer than 42 teams

competed in the event, from all areas of the North West and as far away as the Midlands. The Clitheroe young

sters were drawn in a group of seven teams, and progressed from the group undefeated, with the loss of only one goal. A quarter-final pairing

against Foxhall Juniors saw the young Wolves

emerge 1-0 winners, with some terrific football being played by both sides. With tiredness begin

ning to set in, the local youngsters again pro duced some fantastic foot ball to win their semi-final by a similar scoreline, thanks to a wonderful strike from Owen Jackson. Monsoon conditions

washed out a mouth watering final against the host team, and it was decided that both teams would share the winners’ spoils after what was a ter rific festival of football.

THE weather and local sport had an im p a c t on numbers for Clitheroe Golf Club’s Fourball on Saturday, but there was no lack of competitive golf. The top two pairings matched each

other blow for blow. Wayne Townley’s par for three points on the 18th gave him and playing partner George Stod- dart 39 points and a one-shot margin over the unlucky Clive Wood and Garry Thompson. Another Wood, Paul, also missed

out in the midweek medal when his nett 72 left him one short of the prize list. Tim Stanley produced an outstand

ing three birdies in his last four holes for top spot with his 73-6-67 retirni. Mike Corish was two away in sec

ond and Dave MacKenzie took third with a nett 71. Dominic and Daniel Preedy, with

Julian Troup, are a formidable part nership in team events, and last week’s three-man team event was no excep tion. First place with 83 points gave them a comfortable margin over vice captain Andrew Walmsley, Peter Har rison and Steve Dean. Miles Wade, Paul Connolly and

Garry Thompson finished third. The busy Jimior Section continues

to throw up rising stars and the Spouse brothers figured prominently in recent competitions. Forty-two points gave David top

billing and Rob third prize with 38 points in this week’s Stableford. Sam Geddes confirmed his promise

to split the Spouses with 41 points for second. Rob Spouse took second place in the

previous event behind James Paton, leaving Lewis Rothwell in third with 38 points. The season’s Knockout Competi

tions are reaching the final stages, and the Mixed Foursomes Final features the experienced Chris and Brian Stokes against father and daughter Gary and Emma Byrne for what promises to be a cracker. Kath Townley (82-12-70) won the

par, Emma Byrne (7 up) came out on top ahead of Sue Gibson (1 up) and Tracey Bentley (2 down). The second round of the Authur

Longworth Trophy was played at Whalley Golf Club on Saturday, the winner being slightly overshadowed by a magnificent, course record equalling, round of 66 by Robert Andrew. Peter Fletcher (70, 67=137) was the

overall winner. Tom Tuley (69, 71=140) took the Division One prize. Stephen Crossley (72, 72=144) was

top of Division Two, and John Lomax (69, 78=147) lead the way in Division Three. Chris Blackadder, who had led after

the first round, was left to content himself with the best overall gross (73, 81=154) - Andrew not having played in the first round. On Bank Holiday Monday, the tra

ditional mixed texas scramble was played. In his final competitive roimd before returning to sea, captain Clive Rees, his wife Bridget, Joyce Andrew and Roger Altham were in the top slot (68-7.3-60.7) closely followed by two more husband and wife pairings, Chris and Carole Blackadder and JoM and Iris Sherry (69-6.7-62.3). This coming Saturday, Whalley

hosts a Men’s Open Singles competi tion - there are a few tee times still available for both morning and after noon starting times which can be booked by ringing 01254 824766. The ladies at Whalley played in a

medal and Veteran’s Trophy on Thursday. The winner was Marion Chambers

(97-26-71), with Julie Stephenson tak ing second place (91-19-72). In third spot was Wendy Green

(100-26-74). The Veteran’s Trophy was won by Anne Prior (100-26-74). The juniors at Whalley played in a

36-hole competition on Sunday. The winner, with both rounds of 79-

6-73, was Tom Tuley. In second place was William Lan

caster with roimds of 86-11-75 and 85- 11-74.

Dramatic win for Grindleton Football

THESE local rivals served up a thrilling spectacle, with Grindleton just edging it at the death. The home team opened the scoring

when Dave Parkinson netted with a fine diving header. And after 25 min utes, Paul Astin made it two. WFC got back in it -with a penalty,

then with minutes of the first half remaining, Astin nipped past the two centre-halves and slid the baU past the keeper to give himself two debut goals.

After 55 minutes, Grindleton scored

again to bring themselves back into the match at 3-2. Then, with the referee playing time

added on, it looked like all the home team’s hard work had been scuppered when a deflection took the ball into a Clitheroe striker’s path, and he

slipped it past Mashiter to bring the scores level. That heartbreak turned to joy just

seconds later though, as a clearance from Fielding found Astin, who laid the ball to the tireless Jake Chadwick. He somehow wriggled his way

through two challenges and slotted the ball past a despairing lunge from the keeper to give Grindleton the points. • DOG Inn -will launch their new

Harry Dewhurst Memorial League campaign with a visit to Clarence at Haslingden Sports Centre on Simday. The Whalley side have had a busy

summer during which they have added a number of new signings to the squad. Despite a strong finish to last season. Dog looked set to be relegated but were reprieved due to the folding of two clubs that had finished above them.

RU men are back

in action Rugby union

THIS weekend sees the start of the new season at Clitheroe RUFC for all teams. On Saturday, i t ’s the

turn of the senior sides when the first XV open their account in their new league, the Miller Homes 3N at Rossendale. The seconds are at

home against Colne and Nelson in the Miller Homes 5N. Both matches kick-off

at 3 p.m. and the club welcomes everyone down to enjoy the rugby and ensuing festivities in the clubhouse. There’s still time to

dust off the boots for training and have a run out every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. Youth rugby kicks-off

on Sunday at 10 a.m., with registration and training for the Minis and Juniors (6-7 years). Incoming Junior

Rugby Chairman Paul Taberner has work tire lessly through the off-sea son, setting up fixtures and working with all the volunteers to set up what will be a brilliant season for young rugby players. Taberner

said:

“Although rugby is devel oping well in Clitheroe, may I make a particular plea for more coaches, assistants or just parents willing to act as team managers to come along and help out - no previous experience is needed as training will be given!” If you need to know

more about junior rugby at CRUFC, please con tact Bob Wilkinson through the website at www.clitheroerugby.com or on 07962 099935. At 2 p.m. on Sunday,

Clitheroe’s new Senior Colts team play their first game, at home, against Ellesmere Port in the Raging Bull Senior Colts LeagueE. With a great deal of

interest from a niunber of players who have previ ously played in the younger age groups, as well as from a group of new players from CRGS, Clitheroe Senior Colts could be a formidable side and look to perform well playing against teams from established clubs such as Bolton, Orrell and Vale of Lime.

Chatburn stroll on

C R IC K E T : T h e inclement weather condi tions failed to rain on Chatburn’s parade as they strolled to a com fortable eight-wicket vic tory over Long Lee. The home side won the

toss and put their -visitors in to bat on a damp wick et.

Long Lee struggled to

come to terms with the conditions and were bowled out for a meagre 63 with opener A. Broadley (32) and S. Butterfield UO) the only batsmen to accumulate double figures. But it was Steve

Bowker’s fantastic five wicket haul that really caught the eye. His innings finished

with 5-15 from 12.2 overs, while John Lockley (3-23) and Ashley Ben

nett (2-19) also made vital contributions. In reply, Chatburn

were only 10 runs from victory at the fall of the first wicket thanks to Mark Braithwaite’s 23 and David Thornber’s 29.

Damian Gupta (8) and

Mark Neremberg (1) ensured victory for the hosts following an impressive performance.
