Paul added: “I was always very

clumsy with walking as a child and used to fall over a lot. “At 13, I was diagnosed with

cerebral palsy and had physiother apy under a paediatrician until the, age of 16, but then it just stopped.” Paul went to see his GP last year

after developing new symptoms as his speech was suddenly affected, and he developed tremors in his arms and was almost completely wheelchairbound. He was referred to Royal Preston

Hospital where, after tests, doctors told him he had been misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy and he is now being investigated for a genetic condition. Paul said: “I had intensive reha

bilitation and physiotherapy at the Royal Preston Hospital and my aim was to be able to walk at Clare’s wedding. “As the physio progressed, I

began to walk with the aid of a frame and then I managed to get on to crutches. “It was a bit like a military oper

ation as only me and my mum knew I was walking and we kept it a secret from Clare so we could sur prise her at the wedding. “When I first stood up, I almost

chickened out because there were so many people I didn’t know, but the DJ gave me an encouraging nod and I knew I had to do it and set off walking. “It was worth it to see the look

on Clare’s face and she burst into tears and we had an emotional hug on the dance floor. We will certain ly never forget Clare’s wedding!” Our pictures show Paul walking

with the aid of crutches and posing with his sister on her wedding day and her new husband, Andrew, and other guests. Above, Clare is over come with emotion as she embraces her brother on the first dance. (G280809/2)

A LOUD bang alerted a Clitheroe family to a road accident outside their Waddington Road home early on Tuesday morning. The family went outside to

find their parked Peugeot had been badly damaged in the accident, which happened around 8 a.m. In total three vehicles were involved, but fortunately no-one was hurt. It appears that a Vauxhall

Corsa emerging onto Waddington Road from a back street next to the Pedal Power bike shop was in colli sion with a Mercedes Benz works minibus owned by Cross Hills-based construc tion company R. N. Woolen That impact caused the

minibus to collide with the parked Peugeot 206, pushing it across the pavement and up onto a low garden wall. All three vehicles were damaged, but Clitheroe police were quickly at the scene and had traffic moving again. The owner of the parked

Peugeot commented it was lucky the schools were still on holiday for a few more days, as the pavement would nor mally be busy at that time with children making their

way to school. Our picture shows the

minibus and the badly dam age Peugeot, which was pushed across the pavement and up onto a garden wall by

the impact. Free valuation evenings

TWO free valuation evenings will be held by Clitheroe- based auctioneers Silverwoods next week. Anyone with ceramics, pic

tures, silver, jewellery, furni ture, collectables and antiques can have then identified and valued by Silverwoods’ experts free of charge and, if they wish, enter them for a

forthcoming auction at two free valuation evenings next

week. The first vaulation event is

on Monday at Thyme Restaurant in Longridge and the second on Tuesday, back at Silverwoods’ main auction rooms in Lincoln Way, Clitheroe. Both events run

from 5 to 7-30 p.m.

www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Armed jewels robbery on driveway

POLICE investigations are contin uing into an armed robbery in which a man was viciously attacked on the driveway of his home in Whalley. Three masked raiders pounced

on the man, who was with his wife, as they returned to their home in Mitton Road. The offenders attacked the man and escaped with thousands of pounds worth of jewellery. Detectives are appealing for

information about the “vicious and unprovoked” incident, which happened around 8-40 p.m. last Wednesday. The three raiders ran off towards

Whalley and the injured man was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospi

tal with serious arm injuries. He was later transferred to Royal Pre ston Hospital and underwent sur gery to his injured arm and was discharged on Friday. His wife was not hurt. Police cordoned off the area to

allow investigators to examine the scene and officers are speaking to potential witnesses and carrying out forensic inquiries. DI Claire Holbrook, who is

investigating the incident, said: “This was an extremely vicious and unprovoked attack on a couple who had just returned home. “While this type of incident is

rare, clearly it was a very frighten ing ordeal for the couple involved and a team of detectives are carry

ing out extensive inquiries in the area. I appeal to anyone who saw what happened or who saw any thing suspicious in the area either before or after the incident to con tact police. “We are at the early stages of

our inquiries and at this point, it is unknown what type of weapon was used. Clearly it caused a severe injury to the man’s arm.” “I am particularly interested in

speaking to residents who saw any suspicious or unknown vehicles in the neighbourhood around the time of the robbery.” Anyone with information is

asked to call police on 0845 125 3545 or Crimestopers, anonymous ly if necessary, on 0800 555 111.

Three - car collision

calendar girls effort for cancer charity

by Julie Magee

A WIDOW who lost her husband just three months after they married is taking part in a Calendar

Girls-style fimd-raiser. Janis Whitlock teamed up with 11 other Ribchester

women after being approached by neighbour Billy Sharpies, who has lost his partner and stepson to cancer

in recent years. Janis (52) and Brian (64) tied the knot on June 7th,

2008, at Clitheroe Register Office and then enjoyed a cer emony at Ribchester Church in front of friends and fam

ily the following day. But just months later, more than 400 people gathered

at St Wilfrid’s Church for his funeral following a diagnosis

of inoperable bowel cancer. Janis, who owns Janis’s sandvrich shop in Blackburn

Road, Ribchester, said: “We went on our honeymoon and

he started getting a pain in his side. “When we came back, he went for some tests at the

hospital and they said, ‘I’m sorry but you have got bowel cancer and it ’s spread to your liver and lungs’. We thought this could not be happening. We were married for

111 days. “It’s been a hard 12 months, but doing the calendar has

helped me a lot. Living in Ribchester, it’s like a big family.

Everybody has been so supportive.” Brian, who has a daughter, and mother-of-two Janis had known each for 20 years and he was best man at her

second wedding. Janis said she felt she had finally found happiness with keen angler Brian, former owner of Lostock Tackle Box, Watkin Lane, in Lostock Hall. She said: “He was absolutely wonderful. He just loved being with me and doing things for me. He was like 64 going on 12. “At the wedding, he was bouncing off the walls. He was just happy, loved people, loved life and he’d do anything

for anybody.” The calpuHar has been produced by Workhouse Cre

ative Marketing, Ribchester, and the cash will be given to Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Extra money has also been raised by a “guess the legs” competition, which saw raffle tickets sold to villagers showing just the bottom

half of the ladies’ legs. The calendar will be launched at Ribchester Sports and

Social Club on September 19th.

jorie Copson, of Hill Crest Road, suffered a pelvic fracture in the fall.

Her condition deteriorated and coroner Michael Singleton said

stress caused by the fall together with other pressures on her weak heart brought about her death. Mr Singleton recorded a ver dict of accidental death.

Countdown on to Mayor’s TV date

A CCUNTDCWN is on to a mayoral appearance on a cult television programme. On Tuesday, the conundrum

facing Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Beverley Jones (pic tured), is to make sure she gets to the studios in Manchester in time to record her appearance on the classic Channel Four

show. Now hosted by Sky Sports'

Jeff Stelling, “Countdown” was the first programme to an on Channel Four in 1982 and has become a favourite show of Coun. Jones and her husband, and mayoral consort, Howell. Since she successfully audi

tioned Coun. Jones has been sharpening her spelling and numerical skills by competing alongside current contestants from the safety of her Clitheroe home. To secure her place on the show, Coun. Jones sent off her application and then had to perform successfully during a telephone audition.

Coun. Jones has decided to

use her television appearance to help boost the good causes she is supporting during her year in office. “I am suggesting that people either sponsor me per point scored, or give me a donation based on the score I achieve,” she said.
